Default How will a snorkel effect performance?

I've done lots of snorkel searches and people have touched on the subject....but....I'd like a discussion from people who actually noticed how a snorkel effected performance.

I like playing in/near water and I like the look of a snorkel, so those are my main reasons for getting one, however, I also tow a trailer all summer. If snorkels noticeably HURT performance, it might outweigh my need for one. I don't play in water often enuf or aggressively enuf to worry about hydrolock, so I don't want the 'cheap insurance' answers. I won't take chances in water without a snorkel.
If snorkels HELP performance, then, it's a no brainer...I'll get it asap.

Thoughts that I had on the subject are: Snorkels take air from outside engine bay, therefore, might help performance like a CAI.

Snorkels have bendy long tubes, therefore might HURT performance with less pressure?

I dunno, thats why I'm asking!

Thanks for the help

how i look at my snorkel is that it might as well be a CAI. it pulls cooler air in from outside the HOT engine compartment. it just also happen to help protect my jeep from being hydrolocked when i am out playing in the river, or when the river comes to me like it did yesterday in a freak rain storm that hit my area. better safe then hydrolocked is what i say

Can you tell me if you noticed a difference in gas mileage before and after?

not really, then again, i dont pay attention to it.

but if you play in water, it is a must, trust me, do a search on hydrolocked jeeps and you'll quickly come to the conclusion that one is needed if you like water sports

Well...here are my findings...all with the added weight of bumpers, winch and running 33x12.50 tires 6spd and 3:73 gearing

AirRaid CAI with Superchips - 87 Octane.

I gained some performance - seat of the pants gains and fuel mileage went up slightly compared to the stock box. Also, love the Growl it had!

AEV snorkel with STOCK filter with Superchips 87 Octane.

It was a little boggy my first tank full but lately it has opened up! I think it was the computer re-learning itself with the new airflow & back to the stock filter.

It does not have the same jump as the CAI but it's very close. I have ordered a AFe high flow drop in filter for the stock box and this should really improve the seat of the pants performance and get it back to the CAI system power and probably more as the AEV snorkel and stock box are getting MUCH Cooler Air than my AirRaid CAI system....Totally sealed from the engine heat as you do seal up all holes in the stock box!

Fuel Economy has gone up by 1.5MPG compared to the CAI even with the Stock air filter. I did lose the throaty growl but hopefully gain some back with the drop in high flow filter. The biggest thing it saved me on a very unassuming mudhole that I would have for sure hydrolocked.

How annoying is the snokle on the highway? I imagine it would be quite noisy.

perfect example of why you need a snorkel if you play in water n mud, i can only imagine the psi of the pucker factor on this run but i am betting around 130 psi in the rectal pucker area

crazy pic bud

Like BigJ stated....The snorkel is very quiet on the highway...don't even hear a peep out of it. The AirRaid CAI system I had before I switched to a Snorkel had a really deep growl at full throttle and the odd whistle (Turbo Whistle) at lower speeds.

Exactly a perfect example: Pucker factor was higher for my daughter sitting in the passenger seat as all she saw was mud coming to her window...thinking we are DOOMED and would sink to the roof!

I thought the hole was fairly flat and maybe up to the bumper and I got one hell of a surprise when I dropped. My first instinct.. get out of this big mud hole pit and got on the gas and the last thing on your mind is the air box flooding, but of course I had the snorkel on...stock box or CAI it may have been a different story.

If I had either a Stock box or CAI ....BOOM...hydrolocked. Snorkel saved my rear big time! BEST $400 bucks I spent...saved me $2000+ for a motor plus a really steep $$$$ Tow bill out of the bush!
