JK Radiator Fan Replacement (Universal)
Oh great, so I ordered the wrong fan... Anyways, I'm not going to receive it till tomorrow since they took their time shipping it, even though I paid for overnight... Instead of trying to remount the entire shroud, I may just try to see if the fan motor will fit in the Jeep shroud without too much modification. I'll post some pics tomorrow night when I get a crack at it.

I guess you havent read my posts, I have been talking to a SPAL engineer, not some sales guy and I have been giving him measurements. The Sherman doesnt say crap about being waterproof, no info what so ever on it except that it replaces the stock part number, whoppie, I've replaced my stock 5 times its a POS open motor. I doubt the sherman is waterproof either. No warranty info about fans on the warranty page either. I'd much rather go with a fan that I know is waterproof. Everytime I have emailed SPAL they got back to me the same or next day, very good in my book. The engineer sent me a wiring diagram for a kill switch and relay also. I'll be updating soon

I am ordering SPALUSA part # 30102049, I will be putting a kill switch with it also, he said it was best because when fan is half submerged in water it could cause bend or breakage of fan blades. I will only shut it off if stuck in water that deep not just to go through water/mud. He sent me a diagram of how to wire the relays. He said to use one 40 amp single pole double throw relay if wiring without switch, and two if wiring with kill switch.

There are 3 wires at top of the fan shroud electrical connector, black is ground and the other 2 are high and lower speed power.

Hey Matt I jsut got his email back about # 2082....here is what he said and sounds good
"The 30102082 fan is another good option and will work. The fan housing is deeper so it might not fit as easily as the 2049. If you there isn't any problems with depth then this fan will work about the same as the 2049. In fact the 2082 and 2049 have the same motors but different housings and fan blades. There is one advantage to the 2082 with the larger paddle blade when you are going through the puddles the blade will be less likely to flex. It shouldn't make any difference which fan you use, as long as there is room for the extra .3" depth required for the 2082. That probably is a longer explanation than you wanted but now you know what the main differences are."
Since you are getting it tomorrow, how about letting us know how it fits in shroud and in jeep, I think we will be fine with the .3" extra depth. So you are the guinea pig haha. Give me a call if you want a hand putting it in, shoot me a pm.

the originator was talking about issues with water and mud on trails, and mentioned a sealed OZ fan.
2 things that will kill a unsealed fan motor are:
1) riding submerged, which if you do without a snorkel you'll have more problems than just a fan motor.
2) riding around with mud caked up in your fan shroud - which will kill a fan motor sealed or not sealed
i've had a 2007 and now have 2008 wrangler, ridden in many mud holes and water above bumper (not submerged the hood) and never had to replace fans in either vehicle.
the sherman and factory are not sealed, but unless you ride submerged you shouldn't have a problem - again unless you ride with mud caked up in your fan shroud - which will fry the motor, sealed or not sealed.
part listed is an option to the mopars $300+ fan and should help those who don't have a snorkel.
read your posts but you weren't the originator of the thread.

well no I wasnt the original poster of this thread, but go read this one, I know a thing or two about the fan, I've replaced 5 motors and you can buy JUST the motor for $95 dont need to buy the entire assembly. You are lucky you havent killed one yet, if you read the other thread, you will see 30, well 31 who have, one that had voted no has now replaced his. I've killed them in deep holes by deep I mean over bumper, but not over hood, I've never seen the fan itself caked with mud, I think mostly because its spinning and throws the mud off I think. I have also killed some in shallow holes and I know other members that have also, the motor gets splashed with water its killing it. So you do NOT have to ride submerged to kill it.

the kill switch is a great idea for sealed or unsealed motors. these plastic electrical fans probably don't do so well torquing mud or water!
i power wash the mud off my unsealed fan numerous times - really thinking the kill switch is going to do more to save (over torquing) your motor than sealed bearings?? unless you get salty, then you'll have corrosion and sealed is the way to go.
are you riding on the beach, or in salt water??
