Is this thing plug n play or not?! I read some say they just hooked it up and all good and then others say you have to hook it up, put it in neutral, ground purple wires, all while jumping up and down naked and drinking diet sprite. Make sure not reg sprite! GEEZ!

So what is it? Does anyone know the exact part to order for JUST remote start capabilities only? And is it just going to be plug n play?

If not, I'd rather just have someone who knows what they are doing install one. Have spent way too much on my Jeep to have it get fried by $100 remote start because it doesn't do what promised.

Any input appreciated
Bottom line:
1. Buy from Amazon seller called Car Alarm Depot because he programs the unit for you.

2. Package comes with a single big harness with multiple plastic connectors and open attached to it AND another 20-pin plastic plug connector that has multi-colored wires (even though you only need the yellow wire and a purple-white wire).

3. Connect yellow wire from 20-pin plug to the big harness' yellow wire. This is all the splicing that is required. The resulting harness gets plugged into the black box unit during installation. Follow the directions.

4. At some point you will need to touch the purple-white wire to a metal part of the jeep for 1 second. Then you complete the rest of the steps for the install.

That's pretty much the gist of it minus a few details.

@jateandsamjk look back through the thread, bottom of page 11 I believe. It shows an updated instruction manual look at diagram C. Then, look at the install instructions on programming in the back of the booklet You will see in diagram C highlighted yellow box Shows the connections. Step 7, shaded gray area in the back of that manual ,shows the steps for programming that is where the purple white wire will be used. I think the confusion with plug-and-play came about when there was two different sellers being used. If you can't find the eBay seller, which the link was in the very first post. Use the Amazon seller (car alarms depot) great service.

Just FYI...

I did the same thing with Directed's DBALL2 and the appropriate T-harness. I flashed it myself with the xkloader. 15 minutes and no more cold drives to work. Less than $100.

The only reason I did the directed route vs the other model is because I am going to add the range extender with 2way remote so I can use the same remote on both cars. Five connectors to hook up and done. I'll do the parking lights later when it warms up!!!

Default Step-by-step instructions

I installed mine this weekend on my 2013 JK Sport with factory "Security Alarm". I was a little nervous that I was going to brick my Jeep by messing with the immobilizer, and I wasn't clear about what programming I had to do given that the seller "programmed" it for me. In case anyone else has those fears/questions, below is what I did, step-by-step. It looks long, but the actual install really only takes 10-15 minutes.

  1. Read this all the way through first.
  2. Order the EVO-CHR-THAR5 from CarAlarmDepot on Amazon. I paid $89.95 + $10 shipping
  3. Right after you place your order, contact the seller and ask them to program the box for "stand alone" use and update it to the latest firmware. (Go to your orders in Amazon, click on the order, then "Contact Seller")
  4. While you're waiting for your box to arrive, read through this thread. There's lots of good info in here.
  5. When the box arrives, read through the updated version of the instructions. This link was provided by Car Alarm Depot and is slightly more detailed than the printed version in the box: http://ifar.ca/download/7711/evo-all...v-20130219.pdf
  6. Like a previous poster, I trimmed all the unnecessary loose wires. Primarily the ones on the 20-pin connector EXCEPT the yellow wire, AND the purple/white wire. There is also a purple wire and a yellow wire coming out of the wire loom. you can trim the purple wire (you won't need it). There are some other wires you can trim, look for wires with no connector on the end (orange ones with stripes coming out of the white 4-pin connector, and white ones with stripes coming out of the red 4-pin connector). If this makes you nervous, skip it. You can jam all the wires under the dash.
  7. Connect the yellow wire from the 20-pin connector to the yellow wire coming out of the wire loom. You can trim these a little before connecting them to neaten things up a bit. I soldered them, but a butt connector will work just fine.
  8. Strip a little insulation off the purple/white wire coming from the 20-pin connector.
  9. Grab your keys, all the parts, some zip-ties, electrical tape, a 10mm socket, and a torx T15 driver with a long shaft, and head out to your Jeep
  10. Remove the dash panel under the steering wheel by gently pulling the top out. With the plastic piece out of the way, remove the two bolts behind it with a 10mm socket to remove the metal plate.
  11. Remove the steering column housing: Look under the steering column and remove the 2 recessed torx screws, and then the one obvious one in the middle. The top and bottom pieces of the steering column housing should come apart easily but you may need to pull a little.
  12. Following steps 1 through 3 on instructions for the THAR-CHR5, page 14 in the link above. The "immobilizer module" is the little black box under the ignition. STOP when you get to finish step 3. The next (unnumbered) step says "Make all the remote starter's required connection" which you might think means "plug in all those connectors", but it doesn't. It means "twist those yellow wires together", but you already did that.
  13. Follow steps 4 and 5 in the THAR-CHR5 instructions. When you get to step 6, the lights will cycle around, so you don't have to catch the blue light the first time through.
  14. If you have a factory alarm: For step 7 in the THAR-CHR5 instructions, grounding the purple/white wire seems to be the most reliable method to make the starter work with the alarm. When the blue light is lit, just touch the purple/white wire that you stripped to any bare metal under the dash for a second.
  15. Follow the rest of the THAR-CHR5 instructions.
  16. Test it out by removing the key, closing the jeep doors, and pressing the lock button on the key fob 3 times. Be patient, it takes a few seconds to start up. If it doesn't work, go check your connections, and then go back to #12 above.
  17. Before you pack things up, put a little electrical tape over the end of the purple/white wire so it doesn't ground out again accidentally. Like a previous poster, I didn't trim the wire just in case I needed to reprogram it in the future.
  18. Gently tuck the wire loom in and reassemble the steering column housing (the 3 torx screws). The box itself will be hanging down below the steering column.
  19. Zip tie the remote-starter box in the space behind the metal plate removed in step 9 above. I originally strapped it to the metal brace that the plate attaches to, only to find that the bolts for the cover plate were long enough to poke into the remote-starter box. So I ended up just strapping it to a bundle of wires. Not ideal, but it did the trick.
  20. With everything tucked in, test the system again. If its all good, replace the metal plate and plastic panel.
  21. Grab a beer.

Last thing, no where does it say what to do when you've remote-started the Jeep and you get in with the key in your hand. Stick the key in the ignition, and turn it to the "run" position. The good news is that even if you instinctively turn it to "start" nothing will happen (you won't grind the starter). I'm not sure if that's a feature of the Jeep, or of the remote-starter, but either way its a nice safety feature.

Thanks to the OP, and to everyone else who described the install. This is a great upgrade.

Installed mine, followed all the steps mentioned from previous posts, and it works great; but my horn honks one its own during the starting process, not like the alarm is going off though. push the lock button 3x- get 3 honks anytime after the third lock I get one more honk, the jeep starts than within a few seconds it honks again. Anyone else experience this?

That is by design. That first honk after clicking your key 3 times is to turn off your alarm temporarily to allow remote start. Otherwise you will cause the alarm to go crazy when it remote starts. Then after it remote starts you will hear another honk to signify the alarm turning back on.

This was the whole reason for the purple white wire step. Your alarm needs to disable for a second to allow the jeep to start without honking like crazy. Then you want the jeep to rearm after starting. That's what the purple white wire step enables.
