Shocks are all about controlling fluid transfer from one side of the internal piston to the other. This is what gives them their ability to control your wheel to cab motions effectively or not in any situations, not just BAJA.
The larger this area the more ability for control of this fluid transfer, the better available damping options you have, slow or fast.
Standard $100 shock on the right. EVO SPEC King on the left. Pretty obvious which one has the better potential to control the fluid flow...
Thats not to say a standard shock will or will not work for most people, just that there certainly is a major difference in the construction and design philosphy between the two. Certainly if the $100 style shock on the right could be made like the EVO SPEC King on the left and still be $100, ALL manufactures would make them that way because of their damping benefits...

OMFG I just got my EVO tuned king coil overs-today and they are almost too pretty to put them on. They make the 5100's look like a toy.
The ram is huge and the quality is over the top crazy.
Thanks for the speedy service Andrew
Here are a couple of picts. These are the 12" threaded bodied 2.0 with res evo tuned.

All EVO SPEC OEM King shocks are made from solid billets of aluminum and steel. They are completely rebuildable and all parts are replaceable. Since they are rebuildable, they are technically the last shocks you will ever need to buy.
They can also be revalved if you would like to change the ride of them.
EVO SPEC OEM Shocks are available in 0-2.5" lift, 3-5" lift and 6"+ lift per shock below.
2.0 Non-Reservoir: Front $235 Rear $247 (each)
2.5 with Reservoir: $340 front and/or rear (each)
