Default Tools for JK

I got my Jeep recently and have no idea what tools I should keep in the Jeep. Any pointers would help.

Right now, I have a tow strap, hi-jack, d-links, wrench for lugs, pliers. What socket set, etc should should I keep in the Jeep.

I just added a 1/2" driver with long handle and metric sockets for suspension stuff. Big wrench with some leverage will go a long way if you have to do something underneath.

The very first reply out of the chute got to the heart of the matter: For what? I carry a roll-up tool pouch with some very basic tools--couple screwdrivers, pliers and long nose and wire cutters, crescent wrench, Torx wrench set (fold-out in single metal sheath), two four-way ratcheting wrenches (eight sizes four metric, four SAE* total), etc. That roll-up pouch stays in the Jeep.

When I go on trip, I carry a lot more tools--but I'm into expedition travel where the nearest assistance could be a day or two drive away. I have to be able to do as much as possible to keep moving. Additional tools include 1/4" sockets, 3/8" socket and 1/2" sockets, both metric and SAE. Instead of having complete socket sets, I carry only one of each size, whether it be 1/4", 3/8" or 1/2". If I need a bigger/smaller ratchet, then I have adapters so the a 1/4" socket could be fitted to a whatever-inch ratchet. I also carry various swivels, extensions and wiggle adapters. I have the really big Craftsman swivel head 1/2" ratchet, which can also serve as a breaker bar. Notable sockets that are must have are 35/36 mm axle nut (since a JK can have either size nut on it), and a 12 point 13 mm socket (to remove the unit bearing bolts--six side will not work).

I carry a set of combination wrenches through about 19 mm/3/4 inch, then open ends through about 27 mm/1-1/4 inch. I have a Vice grip pair of pliers that work similar to channel locks, but get really huge (needed one time when a jam nut on a front LCA came loose). There are also a few spares/consumables--short lengths of insulated wire, stainless steel safety wire, fuses, F4 tape (Google it), WD-40 (tiny can), etc.

I'm sure I'm fogetting something, but that gives you an idea if you plan to use your Jeep in very remote places.

*The Jeep comes to you all metric. After you start modding, it's probably not all metric anymore.

Good point, the need is both for off-road and exposition trips. I really appreciate the feedback and will get started on my list.

Wire, tape,wd-40,etc is something I overlooked, as well as the mods most likely don't use metric.

Sorry for the reply kh***, I'll keep it short.

Your JK has a mixture of metric and standard sized fixtures and there are recommended guided for what one needs on the trail if one were to search. I won't tell you that you've wasted anyone's time with that, but maybe you can extrapolate.

Never the less.... the HF 300 or so kit is a great starting place for a guy without a tool set for the home (or even the Jeep) already... you'll have to bolster with another hundred or two, but you can get a pretty complete starter kit going that route.
