ummmm i don't really think so i mean this stucco house could fall on me in an earthquake and i have a chance of surviving, and if you are out in the open in an earthquake you have no worries at all. try that in a tornado with 300 mile an hour winds ,trucks, debri, cars you name it flying around and see what happens. And as far as warnings go there are thunderstorms almost daily back east so it becomes just a normal way of life to not pay much attention to them and a tornado could form at anytime from such storms.
not saying an earthquake isn't devastating,i was here for the northridge, the big bear and the landers just right up the road and i will take a hundred of them over the death and destruction i seen from the tornado going through our small town in ohio.
i have experienced both and guess the tornado and all the carnage i recall just stands out in my mind much much more livid.

Having lived in So Cal my whole life and remembering the Sylmar quake in the early seventies, I enjoy a good earthquake, the way you enjoy arollercoaster that scares the hell out of you. I also have this fantasy that during a nationally televised new years day rose parade that there will be a 7.0 earthquake, and that colorado blvd will open up and swallow a rose parade float or 2 and then nobody will ever want to move to california again.

Being out in the open can kill in a earthquake too, if it's big enough.
In Lone Pine in the early 1900's cattlemen, horses and cattle were killed when they were thrown 30' in the air due to a major earthquake in Lone Pine.
It destroyed the whole town except for one wall was left standing on main street. you can see it today.

But I'd still take a EQ over the others.

I agree it is a great rush.
The only better rush I ever had was being in a fire, I started fighting it until the fire dept arrived. everybody else was running out.

We are due !

Try being in a boom truck 40' working on 12Kv lines when the big one hits

I have experienced every thing socal had since the 50's

but the one thing I don't want to experience is a tsunami like the one that hit Indonesia.

fish, I now understand why you would rather be in an earthquake. My co-worker explained it perfectly. He said in all his years he has experienced a few earthquakes whereas in Florida they experience hurricanes every year. Devastation every year, tornadoes are every year..... So now I understand.
