I thought I saw something where the overall unit weighs about 75 lbs. How much does the lid weigh?

Based on the design, does it look possible for buyers to do their own mod to add a window strut or something to keep the lid propped up? I'm going to guess that you'll have to reach into the back to get things when you load this up. Unloading will be easier when you prop it up, but I'm trying to check to see if there is a safe way to just prop up for unloading and controlled closing. That's going to be important for me so that my wife and kids can get things in and out without concern of the lid falling back down on them...

Huge +1 on this. I had originally thought it had a strut on it.

If you come up with some sort of retrofit kit, please let us know, otherwise once we get ours maybe we can fashion something up.

Or is there some way to remove the lid and lay it on the floor so the entire back is open again? (Doubt it since it would need to be larger than the sides but can't hurt to ask).

Could always use the old broom handle prop.

Although seeing some of the guys' work on this forum, someone'll pop up with a remote control air lift for it soon.

 

The only problem with adding a strut is that it's designed for easy removal of the rear deck piece, and a strut would be one more thing to disconnect. I think you can take the top panel off without tools.

 

I asked this in the R&D thread but will ask here again.

Will the top deck stay in place and be secure when the front bulkhead is removed?

Reason I ask is I occasionally carry a 54" long Pelican case that requires the left split in the rear seat to be folded down to fit in the Unlimited.

I don't know the exact weight of the top but it is a little bit heavy. There really is not much reason to have to prop it up since you load and unload from the tailgate. The main reason it lifts up is to slide it off for complete removal although you could leave it up if you had to put a taller item in the storage area. I have been using one since Easter Jeep Safari and haven't had the need to lift the top yet. It wouldn't be difficult for someone to bolt on a strut if they got one with the right length and throw but this would sacrifice the quick removal.

 

The top deck will stay in place with the front bulkhead removed. You would lose some of the weight rating for storage on the top but should work fine as long as you don't overload in this configuration.
