What would you like in a snorkel design?
RR, the left circle area can be very crowded on many modd'ed JKs (with wiring, single or dual batteries underneath, various manufacturer's windshield brackets and various sized lights, cargo / lightbar frames etc).
I do like your idea and expect to be a purchaser (provided it fits with my set-up). I would think the right hand circle area would be the preferred mounting point for a mushroom or ram-air snorkel air intake (same as the TJ's mushroom in prior photo).
There are numerous other accessories I'd like on my JK, but do not have because my current set-up doesn't allow them to fit. Because every JK has a different array of accessories in this crowded cowl area, I figure the right side would win you more orders.

It's a cool idea way more mean looking. It'd be cool if it had a bracket kinda of like a gasket and adjustable in height as an option for people with roof racks or light bars. Still use the bottom windshield light bracket spots and the side supports just also give us longer screws!

but of course on the starboard side. I dig that so much. So low key and not flashy.
Also I guess for that design to happen i'd just have to get a different light bar...which sucks but hey you know. A sacrafice for perfect.

Why not just make the windshield frame work as a snorkel in the first place. Seems with all the space it has that it could deliver the air needed to supply the engine. Plus you would not have to worry about getting it torn off when wheeling though tree's and such. It would be a great project for some engineer to figure out.
Correct regarding the rearward facing intake..... still playing with locations. .. Here is another image... Still in the early development of the intake so please excuse the amateur look of the design. Easier to work in a solid media to figure out fitment issues before spending time rendering in SolidWorks. The more I do up front the quicker it can go on that side of the development. If we have a hard model that we know does not have fitment issues we spend less time and $$ on rapid prototype media. That stuff aint cheap.

And on a side note. How come there are some of you that only want it mounted slightly above the hood? That seems like only a few inches above the stock air box inlet
the way i figure, if you're going to get a snorkel than that means there's a really good chance of getting into some REALLY deep water...why take the chance? Oh, and about the different lengths. I can't remember if it is in the thread already or not, but will we have the option to buy a short snorkel or normal size snorkel? I only ask because I'm sure you guys are trying to please a broad range of preferences here. Or is it going to be a shortish type snorkel with the option to buy an extension that we would have to caulk and seal to attach to the shorter snorkel...I'm not sure if I'm making sense...Hopefully I am. I would just be worried about more having more chances of water getting in due to an oversight on the installer's part....i.e. me

I want the short one so it's visible and I can monitor the intake. I will not be in deep water, if it gets over the bottom of the door I will be upset, but when driving in water 5-10 inches deep for a while I always go really slow. Slower than necessary because I'm imagining the wave off my tires feeding a steady flow into my air box when I speed up.
With the short just above the cowl design I can be sure that the splash isn't an issue and I think it will look better than a longer tube sticking up at or above windshield height.
I'd prefer the kit come with both short and long options, but having cheaper options for one or the other would be nice to, as I don't see me mounting the long tube very often at all.

Oftentimes when going through high water, the truck will create a "bow wave" and the water will be considerably higher at the front than at the cowl. This is why raising it even a few inches above stock height, but moving it rearward will help.
Also, that location will help with "ram air" functionality and also as other posters have stated, monitor-ability.
I don't plan on fording water that, when still, comes up to my headlights. Then you have all sorts of trim and electrical issues as well as mechanical. However, when moving the water can easily become over 6 inches higher at the front and endanger the stock location.

The design will allow either a low mount (as noted in the last post) or an extension for those that want the traditional "Tall" intake.
The goals for this product.
(1) To offer a different solution to the mounting and design of current JK snorkels.
(2) Reduced cutting to body.
(3) Return JK to stock if desired. NO BIG HOLES in any visible body panel.
(4) For use with dual battery trays
(5) Use of inline CAI system (sealed enclosed filter housing)
(6) Drive train vent tie in
(7) Modular mounting locations.
(8) Cost point at or below $350 for base unit.
(9) Compatible with W/S light mounts (Rugged Ridge version for sure)
(10) TRY.. and I say TRY to have design work with light bars.

That's the short list. There is just no way to get every request in. We have to find that happy mid-point that the majority of people will like and want.

The design will include a water trap as added protection. This trap will also incorporate a petcock drain just in case ... The goal will be to keep the water from migrating even with extensions. The intakes for any snorkel system are exposed more to the elements and this offers the chance for more moisture to enter the system than one might think.
