Thats assuming all of the automatics have this problem. It's my understanding that just replacing the TC can lead to the problem reoccuring. And that's because the transmission has already been compromised by the TC failing.

What we don't have in any of these transmission failing threads are the guys and gals that aren't having any problems chiming in saying all is well.

You exactly right. I think they main problem here is Dealerships not properly diagnosing the problem and fixing it the first trip you take it in. I bet if we had acurate numbers most of the problems we see on here are a very small minority.

In this case if they replace the whole tranny and flush the cooler properly ( MAKSE SURE THEY DO THIS) the second tranny would have no more chance of failure that any other brand new jeep. I got just over 32k on mine with Zero Problems with my Auto Tranny.

Default 2 more good ones...

Hi, I've got two Jeeps with no problems yet.

2004 Unlimited Auto (same transmission)

2007 Unlimited Auto

40000 miles on the 04 with 1000 miles offroad & 36 inch tires. Pulled the pan to inspect and couldn't find the smallest sign of any wear whatsoever. That kind of surprised me considering its been on it's side and rode hard on the trails...

16000 miles on the 07 and haven't noticed anything, except i think it shifts too soon from day 1.

Hope this makes you feel better about your Jeep's potential.

So whats the solution then? Just wait for the tranny to fail entirely?

I would think that if I started having problems with the torque converter, I would push for having the transmission replaced. Especially if I had catastrophic failure like histrung. If you are not having any symptoms yet, then don't worry.

However I am very curious to see how Chrysler is going to handle histrung's problem.

Does anybody know if there is a way to have a transmission flushed/cleaned/rebuilt so the bits and pieces of the failed TC will not continue to cause problems if it is replaced?

Yep - done all the time - you'll probably get a remanufactured transmission if that transmission has been out for any time period - I know the basic transmission has been used in other applications but I haven't researched how long this particular transmission configuration has been out (used in a 4WD variation especially).

They strip the transmission down to the bare case, send it through a power washer, blow out all the passageways, then re-build/re-assemble. The cooler lines and cooler will either be replaced or a pressurized solvent run backwards through the cooler assembly and then blown dry to clean out any debris.... On the jeep with the integrated condensor / ATF Cooler the likelyhood of them replacing the assembly is about nil - too expensive to evac and recharge the a/c - it'll get flushed - which will get the garbage that you're worried about out of there.

It would be interesting to get the converter and cut it apart with a lathe like the rebuilders do and then inspect the insides of it - heck if they're getting a new converter you might ask them if you can borrow the old converter for a little bit - take it to a shop that rebuilds them and have them cut it open and see what it looks like in there... (wear wise!)

Once the trans is replaced - I'd be putting in an auxiliary trans cooler and then running it for a couple thousand miles and having the DEALER change the ATF - even if you've got to pay for it (will probably save headaches if it fails again!). Heck you might see if the dealer will install the trans cooler for just a few bucks in labor while everything is out and being cleaned...

Latest update -- NO PROGRESS!

As promised on Friday, the 800# Chrysler folks never called today like they stated they would.

Received confirmation via another dealer (thanks jeep08ham) that Chrysler indeed red flagged my Jeep restricting my transmission from any warranty repairs.

Had to call the Service Manager, and he called back stating he hadn't heard yet from the Chrysler Zone Rep, and I should hear for sure tomorrow.

So, more waiting... fun.

In the meantime, ordered the signature series LOD rear bumper/tire carrier/rack/gas can holders & Shrockworks sliders... Also researching which transmission cooler with built in fan I'll get... so still somewhat continuing with the Jeep obsession.

I'd keep after them. I would be on the 800# first thing this morning.
