Just got my 09 JKU and am wondering if this is the backup camera.... if not what is it?

Yup, looks like a backup camera with IR installed in place of the lock cylinder... Definitely a different location than Ive ever seen..

It is a camera as others have said. I just added a camera myself. Pull the closest tail light check the wiring there. Typically the camera is powered by the rear backup lights. Also what is your headend radio? Unless you have a mirror monitor then the monitor is your headend unless they swapped out an aftermarket unit for the original one.

Head unit is a nav/ dvd player. Not sure of the exact designation. The settings have a camera option that I enabled but never got anything but a black screen when in reverse..

Check wiring.

Trace the wires find the video cable. If the camera has an RCA connecter the plug it into a test monitor to see if the camera is sending an image. Again check the camera power. You are assuming the camera works. From the quality of the camera install I question if the camera works. Also send a different signal to the monitor. Set up a test with an old DVD or similar source an see if it displays
