Heater Core Swap in 30 Mins
Just swapped out my heater core using this method. Cut the framework on the drivers side of that upper mount, and did not put it back. After putting it back together everything is functioning as it should. Super glad I did this rather than tearing everything apart of paying someone else to.
Happy Jeeping!

Like yourself, I wish I had known about this earlier and I would have added one while I had things all apart.

I am about to start replacement of my JK heater core (all parts are in the garage waiting for the temps to rise a bit next weekend) and I intend to flush the system as well.
My question is the sequence:
* Flush then replace?
* Or drain, replace and then flush the system?
If I flush 1st, will I get everything?
Vs. If I flush 2nd after the new core is in, will I be putting crud into the new heater core only to see it get blocked again?

I'ld drain, flush, drain, and then replace HC, then fill with 50/50 coolant. I think that would get the majority of what is running through the system out. The only problem is if there's casting sand still sitting in the block. That's where the added filter would be a benefit to catch future sediments of casting sand being picked up.
I flushed just the heater core with radiator flush and that partially opened up the heater core, at least now it is blowing warm air. One more flush may solve it completely. No need to to change anything
This

Plus a couple of these which is a 1/2in thread to 5/8in hose fitting.
Plus this and some 5/8" hose should work well.

It seems the XJ had the same problem with engine casting sand where here's a guy on Amazon showing this setup for his XJ.

Just finished installing a new radiator and heater core (using the shortcut method). My heat is a bit better but still have a temp difference between passenger and driver and the heat changes based on use of skinny pedal. Thoughts?
