Manual or automatic?
I have an auto because that what was on the lot. I could go either way. Though I guess the auto is easier to drive on the trail.
There are some cautions about shifting a manual in deep water.
Either one is fun.

There are alot of times I come out of my job bummed all to heck, and the drive home usually always cheers me up.

In europe most of the cars are manual because they understand that driving is just that DRIVING. multi tasking while driving is not smart. I understand a cup of coffee is great, I too drink coffee on my commutes, trips etc. But then you have the people on their cell phone, drinking coffee, eating mcdonalds, and trying to tame the kiddos.
Driving should be a chore, you should be focused and a manual adds to that experience to be one with the vehicle. I know its a jeep but I like having full control of my drivetrain.
I mentioned my dislike for autos, in particular my big ford. Of course a ford is not a jeep, so everyone's experience will be different. I made it a whopping 7000 miles on the original auto, then the truck sat one entire month at the dealer under warranty waiting for a new transmission. I got no loaner. Also despite the fact both the manual and automatic are EPA rated identical in mpg, I'd challenge anyone to do a side by side test of the two and my wild guess which may be just that, would be the manual would get 25% better economy under any driving condition. I know in my big ford, I'm exactly 25% behind just for the fact I chose that stupid transmission I did. Also I've never even ridden in a jeep with the auto, but in my ford, the jump from 3-4 on the auto is the same as going from 4-6 in the manual in the jeep. Big drop in RPM, never the right ratio. What junk. OK rant over again
Here are the gear ratios:

These are from an '07, I don't think they've changed through the model years, someone correct me if I'm wrong
