Crud. I just ordered two sets of chains for my Sahara. Cables were not available so I opted for medium duty chains. What would be a better option assuming I am keeping stock tires for a while? A small body lift, or a suspension lift? Or is it more of an offset issue? Stock tires are 255/70/R18. Looks like there is plenty of room. I wont be offroading with chains, just snow covered mountain roads and getting around at ski lifts etc. HELP!

But fact is that I have to have them on board in case of snow on the roads where I live. Cops can give you a 126$ Ticket here and even block you from going ahead when snowy and THEY call for chains
Crazy- to get a ticket for that?
Rediculous!

Around here - we are the guys that pull all the rookies out.
The Sheriff patrol are the good guys around here ... with Jeeps BTW

...No chains needed.

I know, it sounds crazy. But I partially agree with this regulation. You see: Mountain roads are very narrow around here and most of the people not living in the mountains hardly ever see that cold, white, fluffy stuff.

Happens all too often that my 20 min. trip home ends up being a 1.5 - 2 hour trip on Fridays due to hords of clueless tourists coming up for skiing with summer tires, chains mounted on wrong axle or just sitting there waiting for someone who would put the chains on for them.

Pulled out a lot of them with the VW Sharan Syncro with winter tires I had before when I was in good and forgiving mood ...

One day I was driving home at around 20:00h, saw a Mercedes SLK sitting in the middle of the road and a young lady jumping out and waving. Drove around her, stopped and towed her to the side. Then I asked her if she got chains, she said "Sure I do... in the trunk..." I asked why she did not put them on. "I just had a manicure 'cause I go up for a weekend with my boyfriend! What about you put them on for me?"

I answered to call her manicure for the job or her boyfriend, whoever was closer. Then I left!

This is from the 08 manual:

TIRE CHAINS
Install chains on rear tires only. Tire chains may be
installed on all models except the Sahara and Rubicon.
Follow these recommendations to guard against damage
and excessive tire and chain wear:
² Use chains on P225/75R16 tires only. P245/75R16,
P255/75R17, P255/70R18, and LT255/75R17 tires do
not provide adequate clearance.
² Use SAE class “S” tire chains or traction devices only.
² Chains must be the proper size for the vehicle, as
recommended by the chain manufacturer.
² Follow tire chain manufacturer’s instructions for
mounting chains.
I am not sure why there would not be "adequate clearance". Seems to be pleanty of room for chains.

I live in an area where we need chains also and have been pondering what to buy, as my tire size is also on the 'do not use' list. (Stock X, 23S). You generally don't have to USE them but you do have to show them. Anyone verify if I'll damage anything if I DO use them?
Also, is it necessary to turn off ESP when chains are on?

Nothing stated 'bout chains in the Italian Manual! For me this means they are OK!

Manual also says chains should only be used for rear wheels only...

Around here, I think it's illegal to use chains... They don't want us to tear up their nice roads.... Wouldn't be a bad deal if the plow guys actually did their jobs!

So I put on a set of tire chains (cable type) and there seems to be more than enough clearance when turning wheels left and right. Also plenty of room around the tire. I can't understand why the warning about not putting chains on 255/70/R18 stock tires. I guess all that is left is try it in the snow? Any input?
