So what I wanna know is, if I put on some wheel spacers, will that make any difference? Won't that push the wheel out away far enough to put on some good meaty chains?

I just carry chains. They do look like it will be very close without spacers. I do think spacers would eliminate the issue. I was all over the mountain this past weekend, stock 255/75/17 did great. No slipage not even once. It was very icy in number of spots and 6" - 8" of snow on ice in others. Needless to say i was reallyl impressed with the JK.

If restrictions are R2, they will turn you around, even if you have 4wd, if you aren’t carrying chains.
I had chains in my XJ for California, and I never even test fitted them until last week.

I am fairly certain that Colorado makes a legal distinction between snow chains, cable chains, and other devices. If the sign says snow chains it has to be real chain.

Default snow chains

I second the spider spikes, I also use them, in fact just two days ago at Mt. Ashland, Oregon and they are so simple. I use them on my wife's Saturn AWD Vue.

Default Spikes Spider

I used my Spikes Spider yesterday on my 33X12.5 15’s front only. The road was up hill about 10 Degrees slope, snow packed with ice under. I towed a full size pickup up that hill (Low 4X4) with now problems.
