One of the biggest ongoing which gun is better. AK-47 vs. AR platforms
I didn't read through all the responses, but this is coming from someone who is involved in training in both weapon systems...
The AK provides massive and destructive short-range firepower in the 7.62 (AK-47) variants; they do lack in longe range accuracy (beyond 200-300 yards). In addition, it had been virtually indestructible and durable since it's inception. However, within the family of weapons there is a wide range of quality; depending on location and date of manufacturing. This will have a direct impact on the individual weapon.
Th AR/M-16 family had a rough beginning and as a result has had to overcome some initial bad impressions. However, the newest generations are just as durable as the AKs. Older variants can be a bit temperamental, but as long as you keep them clean of carbon deposits they are bulletproof. Where these weapons excel is in accuracy, especially at a distance. It is not uncommon to see M-16 kills at 500+ yards, especially when using a scope. The 5.56 round is poor for up close combat though. It tends to go right through a body.
It depends what I am looking to use the weapon for, but for overall combat arms use, I would go with the newer M-16 variants.

I currently have only 2 AR's. They are a pleasure to shoot and I love them, however if the sh*t hits the fan I'm going to my FAL's.

I have 10 AK's, but in their current configuration they don't shoot worth a crap!

I just need some time to get these built!!!

Not that Ive shot a lot of them but Ive just never liked the ergonomics of the AK. The sight system sucks on the AK though I suppose that could be cured with a Dot or Holo sight. I really could never get the accuracy out of them that I feel comfortable with.
