Shotgun for home defense.
Mossberg 500.. Great gun for the price.. Bought mine for $450ish.. If you're looking for home defense, also check out the Mossberg JIC (Just In Case) line.. They're the same thing as the 500, but no stock, just pistol grip, and an 18.5 inch barrel.. They also come in a waterproof case w/ a sling for transport.
I just picked up a mossberg 930 SPX. I haven't shot mine but have a shot a friends. It's so nice shooting slugs and buckshot through this thing. It shoots soft and is very easy to control.
I have a mossberg 500 and a Remington 870 that I shoot skeet and trap with. I know how easy it is a short stroke a pump under pressure. And seeing as how my girlfriend will be using this to protect her when she's home alone I decided on the semi-auto.

The LPA ghost ring sights with a fiber optic front post are awesome!

I'd like to outfit it like this with a sling and flashlight.

There is a lot of information here. Some of it is pretty good and some is questionable. This is a very personal and specific question that no one could answer effectively without more information. If you live in a small house or an apartment building, you don't want a large rifle to try to navigate the house or a high-powered round that my kill your neighbors. I think most any shotgun round #4 or bigger would be more than acceptable. The average use of self defense is under 7yds or 21ft. This isn't very far. I also believe a pistol is a better choice in such a small area. I think the new Taurus judge could be a great alternative and would serve your purpose well. It shoots 5rds of .410 or .45LC. If you go with a pistol check out safety slugs as they won't penetrate walls and doors.
I have a Winchester Defender shotgun for home protection. I like the shotgun for this purpose for serveral reasons... I used to be a MA in the Navy and it kinda steered me to this just because during a stressful situation shooting a pistol can be really difficult. Racking a round in a shotgun gets people's attention. No aiming required! Point and click! I use heavy bird shot. I don't want to kill the intruder, I want him in the hospital getting all the shot removed pellet by pellet. Unfortunately North Caroline is a "retreat" state meaning even if they're in my house I should cower in my bedroom until they come after me and have no other place to escape.
Just my opinion.
Just my opinion.
Just for thoughts......

If what they are doing (imminent threat to you or your family) justifies deadly force, why would you settle for anything less than the most effective round that you are able to use?
If what they are doing does not justify deadly force, then it doesn't matter WHAT round you use, you should not be pulling (sorry, squeezing) the trigger at all...and if you do, there's a good chance that you'll be going to jail.
The only coherent argument for a round that penetrates less is over-penetration and possible collateral damage to others behind walls. That's on reason why I like the idea of a .223 carbine firing frangible or highly expanding bullets at muzzle velocities that will reliably generate that expansion. The other reason is that carbine will out-perform a pistol in any of the common personal defense calibers.

Just remember,, its easy to explain a self defense with a BG that broke in and you had to dispatch him inside your house than to be hancuffed with said BG in a hospital bed claiming you met at a bar and went to your place for drinks and then you just pulled a gun and blam! The BG's can and do make up stories.. if you need to defend youself with a firearm make it a onesided story later.. Your lawyer will thank you..
I live in a pretty safe and friendly area of the country. I was raised in the country around farms and lakes, pretty laid back! I was brought up hunting and fishing my whole life,(47 years worth), I have put more rounds through a shotgun than most people will ever think to, at everything from rabbits and squirrels to white tail deer and black bear... I have seen what a shot gun can do to flesh using every kind of round out there.
I have a loaded but not chambered shotgun near at hand in my home all the time... I stress NOT chambered just for the fact that "IF" some one were to ever break into my home and threaten me or my family, I have absolutely no problem putting them down, but I believe in giving the guy a choice to either flee or die!!!
In this part of the world, most people who break into homes are kids! albeit bad kids, and I personally have a problem killing someones kid!! I will do it if I have to, but I would like to think that the life lesson learned by the sound of a shotgun being ratcheted would be enough to keep the kid from being a professional criminal!!!!
I can ratchet and fire in less than 1.5 seconds! I know there are those of you out there who will say that 1.5 seconds is the difference between life and death, and, in some cases maybe it is!!!
We are talking about the inside of our homes, usually at night, and during a robbery in most cases. In this case, the robber will be trying to find things to take, not be standing over you in bed holding a gun to you're head!!
The sound of a shotgun will get his attention, and that 1.5 seconds will be all he has to make up his mind if he will run or make a "move"!!!
Maybe you think I am "soft" or stupid, maybe you don't agree, that's ok... I feel that taking a life is a serious thing that should not be done in haste! If I lived in the middle east or in a larger city or populated area, it would be different, but out here, I am more than likely going to know this kid or someone in his family and I would not want to be looking at them from across a court room while trying to explain why I killed their kid! when all he wanted to do is steal my dvd player, not harm me!!!
It is easy to talk about being a bad ass and taking some one's life if you found them in you're home, but in reality, you are going to be a little scared, a little jittery, maybe a little "not quite awake" when you hear that "thump" in the night, and the time it takes to ratchet you're weapon could give you just enough time to realize it is YOU"RE KID rummaging around in the kitchen or coming home late from a date and not some drug crazed robber out to kill you while taking you're tv....
I don't know, maybe I am a little too forgiving sometimes, maybe a little "soft", but for today, and until situations change, I will give some one 1.5 seconds to make my mind up for me...
