I went to Lowes and bought a piece of Aluminum. Bent it. Drilled it. Smoothed up the edges. Mounted it on the Tire carrier. Cost was $12 and I have enough left for about 10 more!

Nice! I just went with an angle bracket, but want to grind down the corners/edges too. But it looks like it may work

There shouldn't be any problem using aluminum as long as he grounds it properly. As you probably know, almost all factory antennas, yagis and such are all made from aluminum. So an aluminum mount isn't a problem.

I am about 1.1 and the SWR.

I ran a 12GA ground from a terminal log on my tire carrier mounting bolt through the gate to the tie down ring in the corner by the sub woofer housing.

I just drilled a hole in the spare tire mount. It's been working fine for me for years: https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/show...are-Tire-Mount

Crappy ground and I bet the mirror is screwing with the resonance. but with a job like that i doubt he cares much.

Installed and wired a wilson antenna on the budget mount today. Works great!
