Where should i mount my cb in my jk
When you mentioned there are other wires on the floorboard... were they from the vehicle manufacture? I noticed that my passenger taillight wires were mounted high along the edge of the rear cargo area. I was thinking that Jeep kept things high (off the floor) in case of water fording or when people rinse their floors out... I just hadn't had the nerve to mess with the carpet on a 2-month-old vehicle.
I was talking about the tail light wire; the ones high up. There are a couple wires running under the seats, though. I haven't bothered to see what they are.
Taking the carpet out was one of the best things I did to the Jeep, BTW, but everybody is different.

What are the drawbacks to using the Cobra 75 vs. more traditional CB units? They're all regulated at 4 watts right? I also understand that the antenna makes a lot of difference in clarity and such. I like the idea of using the 75 because I'm not satisfied with any mounting options for a larger unit.
Pros and Cons of the 75 please.
Thanks
Pros and Cons of the 75 please.
Thanks

I shopped around for a few months before making my decision. My Jeep was fairly new so I was adverse to cutting, drilling or otherwise mutilating it. I know some people like the geeky look of equipment and wires hanging from the ceiling but I prefer a more refined look. Almost like it came from the factory that way.
But I wasn't just into looks. It's had to be functional. Functional means different things to different people. My JK is my Daily Drive (DD). I need traffic/accident information from truckers on the interstate some days. Other days I'm checking in with club/friends on the trail. I only need to transmit a couple of miles but that's about all any CB is good for anyway. By law, you're limited to 4 watts max.
I looked at the Cobra 75 but until I found the CoolTechLLC complete kit I was not sure it was the CB for me. Sure I could hide the connection box almost anywhere but what to do with the all-in-one mic? Once again, I didn't want to drill holes in or otherwise deface my dash to mount a mic hook. The VersaMount (after drilling and screwing the mic clip to it) holds the mic in a perfect location (right height, right distance) using existing screws.
Next was antenna location. Many say never mount an antenna between the gate and spare tire, mount it on the side or on the hood. That messed with my head because actually, on a Jeep the windshield frame is metal and it will be close to a hood antenna whereas the tub on the back of the Jeep is low so you can get away with a longer antenna and still have a lower total height. This is why I chose the gate mount and it didn't hurt that CoolTech has the GateMount antenna bracket as part of their kit. Why not the UltraMount (license mount)? I figured it would be more exposed to branches and inviting to aholes. The gate mounted antenna is more protected and stealthy while still as effective for my needs.
I didn't want an antenna that had to be disconnected and stored or pulled down and clipped to drive into my garage. That sorta defeats the purpose of having a garage door opener. The longest pratical antenna for my mounting location was 4'. And then, I ended up inverting the GateMount in order to bring the total height down another 6". I can always put the GateMount in its correct orientation later to gain back those 6".
My setup has performed flawlessly for me over the past year. No regrets. No second thoughts. I would not change a thing. For my needs it's perfect.
My obsession has moved on to 17x9 wheels, 35x12.5 tires, 4" lift with shocks, front bumper with winch, rear bumper with tire carrier and 4.88 gears.

Now all I need is Mo Money! JEEP - Just Empty Every Pocket
I know it will probably derail the thread but I'd be interested in a pic of cargo area without the carpet... just to see what it looks like.

I created a small hole and ran the coax through that.
I picked up my antenna mount at a local CB supply store... and its designed to be hardwired to the coax. I went with the passenger rear corner at a friend's suggestion but I will say this was very difficult since you have to work through the taillight opening and there's a metal flange that stickes out just before the mount (you'll see it in my second pic).
The alternate location (suggested by the CB store) was to the right of the driver's taillight (between the taillight and gate). There's an indentation or thin section of the body (felt when the taillight is removed) where the mount can be attached... probably easier to wire but you'll do it blind since due to the extreme angle. The antenna will also be in the way of opening the hard top rear glass as the antenna would barely overlap.

I installed an or-fab carrier and will place both antennas there (CB and HAM). Was just wondering how to take the coax from the dashboard all the way there. In the or-fab's case, since it hinges on the passenger side I'll pull the cables out through the taillight. Probably make a small groove on the plastic house so the cables pass through it to access the carrier outside.
Cheers!

This is my post from page 18 below
The L braces should be on the outside of the 3/8" clamp on this picture for a much tighter fit. Not sandwiched where the bolt goes through. I tried 1/4" and it didn't fit and was not tighter.

This mount will work with the new 2011/2012 hardtop that uses the footman loop. I copied this idea from someone who copied the idea. I got everything that I needed to do this mount for a Uniden 520 XL at Home Depot for about $10. This should work with almost any CB if it is not too deep. Even full sized Cobra 29's have worked. It works with the 2012 hardtop. It leaves the back of the radio about 2" to the windshield. I might have to get a right angle adapter for the antenna cable.
The insulated clamps are in a box in the nuts and bolts row. 3/8" is the size you want. It is best to put the L brase on the outside of the clamp instead of being sandwiched in there. It will give you a much tighter fit and won't scratch the paint.
The 1" corner brace was in the row with hinges and gate locks. It is the perfect size. You can also put one or both of the L braces facing in to move the mount or get it to work better.
I had some 1/2" size 10 bolts lying around so I used them. As a bonus they are brass so they will not rust. You need 4 of them and washers and nuts. They were the right size to fit very snug through the corner brace.
I put a strip of "rubber foam weather seal" right on the top back of the radio where it touches the windshield panel. It is the stuff you can put around your doors at home to stop drafts. I forgot to take a picture of it. I think it will remove any noise or abrasion to the panel.

I did a write up of how I ran the wire and grounded the mount here -->https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/jk-w...2012-a-231369/

I also used PowerWerx quick disconnects for the power lead to allow interchanging the power harness for different radios. This way if I want to get the Ham license I only need to run an additional coax and antenna set up and reuse the mount area.

The 2dr has a big hole I plugged. It's the olive green plate right behind the door (b-pillar)
