I know I know! Its just the way he said it. My buddy owns one of those fridges and has said nothing bad about it. For me its not in my soon to be done list and not in the budget. Later on my friend later on! Besides I still have to run the electric!

I think I have found my home on this forum. Great to see all the expedition rigs. This is my kind of wheeling!
I think I found my place in JK Forum as well as far the JK world is concerned. Love it! Didn't know of Overland Journal until someone else here mentioned it either. That's some mighty nice looking country side salmonaediot!

I know what you mean brother, it's why it's taken so long for me to accept. So far, I haven't seen or found any alternative. Good friend tried with a $130 fridge thinking "Hey! I found a cheap alternative!". Except he didn't read into the amperage draw...drew way too much than what even a deep cycle 12v marine battery can handle ( fridge drew 4-5 amps I believe). To fully recharge the battery with a generator would take about 3-4 hours I think he mentioned.

The ARB units only take like .7 amps and shut off once it detects that the battery power is too low to crank the starter. Right now, I'm thinking the cheapest alternative is learning how to solder chip board and build an ARB-like one from scratch...on a funny note, do a quick google search with parameters for "cheap fridge freezer offroad" and you end up with ARB fridge freezers and Engels lol

edit: did some random perusing and found this...I think my ARB route was just replaced by Engel based solely on this feature alone lol http://offroad-review.com/new/index....sa=view;id=809

Nice looking rig. I'm also a stamp collector. And that comes with its own addictions. The bookcase on the far left is my collection. LOL.

Just FYI, a friend of mine is an Engle dealer. He told me they make the ARB fridge for them. He also told me it doesn't have the auto-shutoff feature to protect the starter battery. But, he has an Engle and loves it; I have the ARB and it's great. So much better than a cheap cooler, and the Yeti coolers, which really do keep ice for five days, run about $500. So, $700-800 for a real refrigerator isn't that bad. Also, you don't have ice taking up space in the unit--that translates into an extra couple six packs of beer!!

The 37 qt and the 50 qt have the same footprint--the 50 is just taller. Get it unless you need one of the really huge ones.
