Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my gobi rack and it is the best thing I've added to the jeep for me. I completely understand other's not liking one, but I need one for kayaks, surf rods, strollers, luggage, possibly a tent, etc. The other day I strapped a bunch of wood on it that I bought from home depot. You get the idea.

I will take some pictures of the foam stuff I did for the sound and post up the pictures.

The front is attached to the A pillars via flat pillar brackets.

The Rear is a passthrough design that allows for the rack to be mounted to the rollbars.

I havent tried it yet but the rack can be removed and installed on the jeep while topless and the freedom panels can come out easily with the rack installed.
It's incredibly strong.
http://youtu.be/Tz-Zw5cyBEo As far as soft tops, I don't think that there is a solution yet. I immagine you could mount it to the rollbars when topless and possibly attach it if the back side windows were removed/unzipped. I don't have one so I can't verify.
nice setup....I'm looking hard at this rack.i don't plan on using my rag top that came with my 5dr.i am wondering why u installed that light bar on top of the rack instead of under or in front of the cross bar........I'd think it would get hit by tree limbs out on the trail??? any issues as of yet with it?

I'd like to see the pics of your "foam" solution. I did something similar but they wont stay in place/they move back and therefore the tension against the top is lost (used pool noodles I painted black).

Separate topic - I did move my lights back to my rack yesterday. I had removed two and placed two on the bumper but they just did not cut it on the trails at night.

Here is the foam I used on top of the rack:

It's a Malone kayak pad.

I also used skid row off roads' "top prop." Google it, between the two, no more flapping.

For the wind noise generated from the roof rack,, this $12 full sized mattress pad from Walmart made a huge difference:

The Le Sals from White Rim Trail ...

Where can a guy get some of these rims? They are spare tire rims?

Yes, they are spare tire rims. Off the Grand Cherokee from a few years back. Steel rims that should be used with spacers. The owner had a difficult time finding seven of them (Jeep, trailer and two spares). He had them sandblasted and powdercoated locally. Buried somewhere in this thread are the old and new part numbers for these rims. I looked, but wasn't successful in finding it. But, I know I put it out there a while back.

Here are a couple more pics of the rig ...

I feel your pain, I love my Gobi too but getting stuff on the roof of any rack is a feat. This was my solution

Man, I love the look of those rims, really old school. It's funny that they are spares, I guess sometimes functional looks better than fancy.
