Expedition Modded Jeeps - Let's see 'em!!
Well there was the error. You should always have gas in you cans if your going to have them in the jeep. What good are they with out gas.
That being said I never fill mine till I leave the state of Texas. But I have my extra in the can when the tires hit dirt. Summer 2010 I filled them up in Carlsbad on the way to siting Bull Falls and then over to The Enchanted tower in New Mexico. From there up to Ouray. I never used any of that gas till I was on the highway headed home. Just poured it in to use it up... Same last summer in Wyoming.

Fully loaded with the RTT up on my roof rack and hauling my trailer, I am lucky to get 10 mpg (auto, 35" tires, 4.10s, 5.7vvt) so range is limited. Hence, I carry 10gal on the trailer and 8 gal on the JK and rely on it heavily on back country trips. I'm often joined by my son in his rig, a mostly stock 2dr auto with 33's, who gets 20 mpg and never needs to carry cans. So it really depends on your rig and route.
Going by the mpg indicator in the instrument panel (probably not the best indicator), my JKU with two people and recovery gear got 8mpg on a 20 mile trail ride a few weekends ago. Lots of idling and slow speeds can change your mpg greatly.
Same, rubicon gears and 35s, not to mention the 3 amigos i had with me and our luggage, still got +-225 miles a tank, i know its bad to let the jeep run out of gas but has anyone calculated mileage from gas light to engine off?

My JKU (auto) light goes on when there's still around four gallons left in the tank. That is, the Jeep's tank has 22 gallons and pump fills around 18 gallons. I work a pessimistic case of 13mpg, hence 42 miles.
So, as a general rule of thumb, if we plan for around 400 miles we should be fine on a typical overland trip? Does it cover most cases of not having the gas stations around?

In my 2dr auto, I can get at least 50 miles after the light comes on....
Since I'm hoping to drive that this year, how much should I plan for range?
Related: Don't trust a GPS with gas station information in remote areas. When I was driving out to Medano Pass in CO this last August we did just that. And the gas station wasn't there--had closed down about six months earlier. So, we ended up driving Medano Pass Trail in 2WD and coasting into Alamoosa on fumes. The entire time we were carrying two five-gallon jerry cans that we hadn't bothered to fill up (knowing there was gas in a small hick town in the middle of nowhere--our GPS said so!).
