Yeah. The TJ got that designation. It's pretty surprising since it guzzles even more gas than the JK (on average). I wouldn't say the JK is a very environmentaly friendly vehicle, because not a single vehicles is, but it probably is better than your average SUV I would think.

I'm with you. I mod my Jeep, ride the motorcycle to work, and run around town in the Mazda Miata. I have the Jeep because I have two other fuel efficient vehicles that I can rely on as daily drivers. My Jeep is my toy, I could care less what fuel mileage it gets.

x2 - thirty years of solar flairs has more to do with warming then CO2.

Water vapor (jet streams due to high altitude flight or cloud cover) has a much greater warming effect the CO2. Look at surface temps on 9-10-01 and 9-12-01.

And as far as light bulbs go... your ceramic based - hard to make - tons of crap in them florescent bulbs will still be sitting in the land fills when the good old incadencent bulb that used little energy nor many recourses to make will be long gone... back to sand and metals. You will never ever recoup the energy and resources used to make a florescent bulb over the life cycle of the bulb. It's an environmental PR blow job.

I'm a conservationist, but environmentalist are just businessmen in a green suits looking to take you money for nothing...

On to the Jeep Mod...

Yeah, I'll mod my Jeep. Mind you it's my daily driver (along with my Harley - 45 miles/gal and it's mod'ed too.) but I am going to keep to 33s mainly due to millage...

One of the best ways to cut a huge amount of energy usage would be to switch all our homes over to 24V DC. Everything inverts to DC any way, your oven, microwave, laptop, LCD TV... One inverter vs. 100's in your home... Use the AC to transport the electricity and then use DC to run your home.... huge savings in heat loss, copper (wire and multiple inverters). Switch to LED lights, DC stepper motors, etc... but the entire industry would have to be changed to do it...

The environment is evil it must be punished.

Al Gore is wrong, there is no man-bear-pig. All of the valid arguments have already been put forth in this thread and many others. There are those that just want to assume evil mankind is responsible for ruining all the fun. Go ahead and keep hating yourself, but leave the rest of us alone.

If we’re truly to blame then the sooner humans become extinct the better. In the mean time I don’t care if Polar Bears become extinct, it will only be one of many thousands of species that have come and gone. And no, humans were not always responsible.

I am currently in school studying Environmental Policy and Environmental Science. That said, I still own a Jeep, and it is my daily driver. For the time being I am keeping it stock, mostly because with the miles I drive it would be brutal if it were heavily modified. I am already starting to look for a high MPG commuter car, once that is done I won't have any trouble modifying the JK as it will be a seondary pleasure vehicle.

As others have said, there are a lot of other things one can do to be more efficient and "green". Despite my college major/minors, I am more concerned with sustainable and efficient living than global warming.

There is a lot of misunderstanding when it comes to fuel efficiency vs. "saving the environment". The Prius will take you further with less fuel, so it saves you money-- that is the #1 reason most people buy these things. But the Prius does much more for your wallet than it does for the environment. They take far more energy to build than a Wrangler does, they are far more difficult to dispose of than a Wrangler is, they have a shorter life than a Wrangler and they can't get you out to Nature so you can know how to appreciate it in the first place. When all is said and done, it can absolutely be argued that a Wrangler is, in many ways, greener than a Prius.

Also remember that the JK's fuel standards are magnitudes better than its predecessors. Some members are built up and still claiming 22 mpg highway (don't ask me how.... mine ain't ). So, if our Wranglers today are more off-road capable than the Wranglers of 10 years ago and they have far better fuel efficiency, somebody must be on the right track.... they just need to keep going with that.
I definitely think there some truth to the "dust to dust" arguement, and the longevity one as well.

As for the JK, one of the reasons I bought it was that it can do things bone stock that I would have had to modify my TJ to do, and it regularly gets 3-4 MPG better fuel economy (not to mention being more comfortable and bigger). Definitely a step in the right direction!

It was accepted as true, but not really "scientific fact", as there really wasn't much in the way of scientific method yet (it was in the early stages really).

Interesting bit in the news today reported by the AP -

Carbon dioxide emmisions rose 1.6% last year mostly from residential and commercial use. Emmissions from transportation and industrial sources were flat from 2006.
