personally if you want a 2 door Wrangler, get the manual. 4 door, Auto.

I actually spend the better part of the day driving 4 different JK's (2 2011's and 2 2012's, one manual and auto each). The 2012 auto was simply a better performer than the 2012 manual. I've owned 7 Jeeps all of them manuals. I went to the dealership literally expecting to come home with a manual 2012 model. The auto just sold me.

Now other forms of racing, WRC, F1, LMP1, LMP2 etc. yes those racers have set ups as you described. But again, in the realm of moon buggy, tube chassis, jeep, fj, and samuri bodied race rigs that see open desert and rocks, it is an automatic with a torque converter...just like you find in grandma's buick electra. See screen capture below of the King of Hammers race standings, notice the transmissions being run in a competitive race series. There are 189 racers and maybe a handful of guys not running the auto trans.

All I gotta say a fully built automatic ... Turbo 400 or 727 Torqueflite with a reverse pattern are fun to drive. A bit off topic... hell, even in the old days, when we raced motocross we only used the clutch on the start line. I could upshift and downshift my Maico 450 without using the clutch - and learned I could win races not having to think about pulling in the clutch lever. Could shift that thing just like an automatic.

What you may give up in some parasitic loss, you gain in consentration and quicker laps.

But we're talking about a Jeep Wrangler here... can't realy modify the automatic to make it shift firmer like you can a 727 Torqueflite (well you can on the Jeep SRT8 but it's a hassle).

I had a 5 speed liberty before this jk. It was fun, sporty, and a great first vehicle/jeep. Traffic was a b*tch, there was always crap getting in the transmission, and hills were a lot harder. This auto jk has traversed obstacles that were difficult in my modified liberty like they were a small pothole. Hill start assist is so much better with the auto. They work seamlessly together. I may get another manual jeep down the line but for me (i work at a mall), its perfect!

Default Auto for me

After shifting my 4 cyl. YJ for 8+ years on and offroad...I just plain wanted/needed a break. Hell, I got freakin air conditioning now, cruise control, power windows. it's like a cadillac for me. but anyway, I like both manuals and automatics. Manuals are fun, autos are relaxing and care-free. to each his own. whichever you have doesn't mean you are more or less of a jeeper. Remember...technically the first "wrangler" had square headlights.

I think with the newer 5-6-7 speed autos, that have TC lock up in the 2 highest gears, we have a tranny that can compete with the manual.

Ours are older, but we have a stick 5 speed and the 4 speed auto, and I will always choose the auto on the steeper climbs with rocks involved. No stalling, ever and, with the the 4 to 1 transfer case, there really is decent engine braking coming down hills.

I will not argue with you there!! That 42RLE is craptastic on it's best day when compared to any other possible choice. It is just another example where Chrysler took a profitable short cut instead of taking the less profitable route of actually placing a decent heavy duty auto trans in what is supposed to be a dedicated offroad vehicle.

My dealership: "We don't order manuals because we can't give them away. Nobody wants them."

So I took what they had on the lot because they gave me a good deal. There are times I wish I had gotten stick again, but then I read the 764 threads on issues with manuals trannys and it makes my auto. OK again. Apparently the JK manual is junk. Plus, after owning both I must say that offroad, the automatic rules


i dont call 30,000 dollars giving them away !!! also the manuals your reading about , dont forget are used and abused ! and most of the time 2 to 3 owners ! and one more thing i might add is i liked your jeep untill i saw it was a automatic then i thought ohhh its just a automatic, when i was searching for a jeep the only ones sitting on car lots were the automatics in newhampshire ! auto just dont sell here cuz thier more like for soccer moms, and dealers end up sitting on them !like sitting on a pumpkin the stem must hurt !
