Looks like it does the same as the spacers just moves the pipe back a couple inches. You're saying it puts it on the other side of the cross member?

Correct, this is the AFE pipe.

Bad picture but you can see the crossover in front of the cross memeber here.

That explains why people that have installed it hear a different sound their no longer equal in length. I do like it behind better however its important that they remain equal in length.

If thats the case maybe the bend where it forms the Y is causing the sound difference?

I havent heard of any sound difference with just the crossover pipe....only heard mixed reviews on the cat back exhaust.

I just read a post the other day were a member is going to remove his because of the difference and a couple others commenting on the sound. Apparently there is another manufacture making he was going purchase when came available.

Moving it away is a great idea but the drive shaft will still need to be replaced if the lift is over 3" or it will fail because of the angle in a short time.

i talked to AEV support today, and they recommended taking it to a muffler shop and having them lower the exhaust a couple inches at the drive shaft. i also asked about their thoughts on the driveshaft replacement. they thought the 2012 stock driveshaft with the auto will be fine and doesn't need to be replaced. i am debating on what to do here...TF spacers, aFe Y pipe, muffler shop hack job, new coast drive shaft....oh the decisions.
