WOL - I (and probabaly many others) appreciate your knowledge and first hand experience w/ this subject. It really sucks that the 2012's are going to take a lot more $ to lift properly than most of us expected.

But to summarize - to 'properly' lift a 2012 JKU for the long haul (many many years of service) we should:

1. Relocate the exhaust pipe (AFe Y-pipe or Teraflex spacers)
AND
2. Install an aftermarket front drive shaft

If both of these are done for say an AEV 3-1/2" lift, we should be good-to-go for the long term, right?

Thanks

I'll admit i don't know jack. My dealer has been awesome thus far in the ordering process and is installing my AEV lift for me and allowing me to roll the price of the lift into the 0% financing they are running. I'm trying to decide if i need to add an aFe pipe and coast drive shaft to the build list for them. I appreciate all of ya'lls help.

Well I solved everyone's problem. Pretty easy fix.... Just take your exhaust completely off at the headers. Voila! A little louder than stock but what the hell?
On a serious note can we get away with just buying a new drive shaft and the Tera Flex spacers and be good to go? This thread is getting me all effed up in the head on what to do about solving this problem.... \What drive shaft should I be looking at with my 2012 auto slush box?

So tell me please, what is there about an aftermarket drive shaft that will prevent the severe drive angle? Does a CV (double cardan joint) improve the angle problem? What will prevent the u-joint from failing?

at bare minimum, i would get the drive shaft. even if you're factory drive shaft clears the exhaust cross over, the cv boot will fail sooner than later. there is no fix for this other than a replacement shaft.

yes, you can get something like a coast 1310 shaft for your jk and you should be good to go so long as you're not going over 3.5"-4" of lift. beyond that, you might start to see issues with vibrations.

never said that a double cardan shaft will improve anything. i just said that leaving the factory shaft will cause the cv boot to fail sooner than later and that will effectively kill the shaft. if you have too much lift, you will most likely end up seeing some binding of the double cardan and or get vibrations. assuming you get a good shaft with spicer or neapco joints, they will not fail but, any vibrations you may get from the steep angle may cause other issues like a busted t-case.

Unless i missed it someplace, is this Drive Shaft problem going to be even a problem with a 2" lift?
on the 2012 units.

Thank You.

no, not if you keep your stock shocks or run a set that are close to it in length as they will act as limiting straps. if you run a shock that allows for a lot of droop, you can still have your driveshaft hit even with only 2" of lift...
