Superchips Flashpaq for JK, Initial Impressions
hi all,
i tried the fuel mileage saver today and it basically sucks. i suppose it claims to save gas by removing about 30 horses or so.
i did see a slight improvement in gas mileage (although not 100% certain), but this was only when I had it on cruise control on flat highway. otherwise, the jeep is so underpowered that i think the fuel saver program defeats the purpose.
also, i know that people stated that the tuner automatically detects my vehicle specs, but i looked on the tuner and it states that my tires are only 30.5 inches. is that valid (running stock rubi tires 255x75x17)?
also i manually calculated the gas mileage after getting insane readings of some 22-23 mpg's on the highway with this tank of gas, and i averaged about 19.5 on that tank. bottom line, there seems to be a huge discrepancy btwn the actual mielage and the stated mileage from the dash.
down with the yankees!

As you stated the dash readings are bogus. You don't add HP in a gas burner and see 5-10+% gains.
As someone who has owned 4 diesels in the last 9 yrs I can tell you that you can add HP in a diesel via geeked up timing and see higher MPG's but the odds the idiot meter is right in these jeeps are slim.
When I ditched the junky Tow tune this am the idiot meter claimed 20.6 in 'highly' spirited mtn town city driving.
Even running the 93 tune this evening on 87 octane I'm well into the 20.xx.
Sorry, I don't believe the hype.
But....the 93 tune does impress me considering....

I hated the tow tune as well. However, for some reason my dash MPG rating has been closer to my manual calculations since I starting running a flashpaq. It used to always be 1-2 mpg high and now its usually less than 1 mpg off.
I have no idea why, but it has been this way consistently.

And does it ever change more than 1/10th of a mile when it changes?
I did some pretty good tests with the Mileage XS this summer and although definitely giving up power, it was still better than stock. With the mileage XS I was able to pull about 1.5-2 mpg better than the 87 tune. Despite the better mileage with the Mileage XS tune I was still able to pull an extra 1 mpg with the 93 tune, probably because of less down shifts on hills and reducing by 80% the number of times I was downshifting on the same set of hills. For me it placed the cost/value of running 93 octane when the price per gallon exceeds $3, if it's less than that I'll just run 87.
As for the tow tune I like it a lot for city driving as it definitely pulls better on the low end but I'm not as fond of it for highway use. As I have another vehicle for towing/hauling it's kind of a misnomer, and despite as well as it gets out of the hole, I prefer the other tunes for more rounded every day driving.

i am wondering if the mpg calculator on my dash is off bc the flashpaq is not accurate concerning the tire size or in measuring a mile? in other words, is it possible that the flashpaq can get such high mpg readings bc it measures a mile inaccurately?
i know that jeep is allowed by law to be slighly off with the odometer (i'm referring to actual miles travelled, not mpg's), but i wonder if the flashpaq could affect this/distort this measurement further? has anyone ever tested the accuracy of the odomoeter, stock and/or with the flashpaq?

At least on my JK, if I drive with a really heavy foot, the in dash MPG meter just ticks down slowly every few miles. If I then drive normally it continues to go down for a while, but a some point it starts to tick up very slowly.
It seems like the only time you can rely on the MPG indicator is when you are on a long trip and your speed and the terrain are pretty constant.
Am I missing something? Does the Flashpaq change this behavior?
Well it can not be giving false readings... I used to have to fill up once in the towards the end of the week for my travel back and forth to work. I don't have to any more I can now go over a week!
So it does give better gas millage!
