Mine is a manual. With 6-gear I was considering 5.13s to go with the 35s. Are you suggesting the 4:88 is a better choice? I do a TON of highway driving (20k miles last year).

Yes. 6 speeds have a better final drive ratio A: and B: dana 30 front axles have a smaller ring and pinion set than the dana 44 axles. MAX gear size for a dana 44 is 5:36.1 which is at the edge of strength and reliability threshold. So I went with 5:13,s for the highest possible strength to gearset size ratio. Dana 30 axles have a MAX size of 5::13.1 so 4:88 is the best to go with strength wise AND being a manual trans also nets you the best for mileage for a much better gearset. So rule of thumb one ratio down from max as pinion diameter gets smaller which applies wicked leverage against the ring gear is keeping things safe.

Being a sahara / x you have a dana 44 rear/30 front combo and a 6 speed a set of 4:88's is perfect.

Thanks for the tips Tim. After additional research and calculations I did indeed go with the 4.88s. And had it done at Milford Jeep as well. 1300 and change all-in and they were very easy to work with.

Had them in for about two weeks now and everything is just perfect. While I do miss getting 20 mpg, I thoroughly enjoy not having to downshift to go up hills anymore.

Now if I could just get my Flashpaq working again to re calibrate the speedo and TPMS... Been going back and forth with Superchips since before I dropped the car off, trying to get the programmer to update.

That's pretty cool that a dealership was willing to do that, around here they all say no. Was the 1300 including the gears or just the labor? Where you able to purchase your own gears or did you go through the dealership to buy them?

TJ, You buy the gears wherever you like (I used Bryan @ 4wd.com) make sure you have BOTH master kits. I cannot stress how good the guys are at Milford Jeep.

Zen glad it all worked out and my advice helped you out! My flashpaq I had to re-register and download the updater. (Once you flash just wait on how well the Jeep behaves after that ... makes the gear swap coplete.)
It does take a while when hooked up to the PC so coffee , beer , cigs , whatever on standby is good and is the only drawback of the superchips brand ... S L O W software upgrade , equally as so flashing the Jeep too but options and levels are the best out there.
