Please be cautious when crawlin around with super heavy top loads. Know your limits.


Just DO NOT do what I did back in April. Steep climb, a 45 degree left turn, with rear driver side tire fall into a crack....

Yeah. I mean after 5 days of driving on road and offraod. I was mentally exhausted ( needing shower the same time). Without thinking. I fallowed the same line as the YJ in front of me took. Bad idea... Should have focused more.

 

There is a middle support bow that clips into place just above the sound bar and runs the width of the vehicle. The trick is to pop that up first, which allows you to slide the front part of the soft top back just a bit before flipping it back. You may or may not need to release the two little side clips that sit on top of the door surrounds.... I don't remember if you need to do this if you're just going into sunrider mode (and not putting the top all the way back).

I just did this again today actually -- I promise next time I do it I'll take some more illustrative pics. Sorry I don't really have them at the moment, hopefully my description is at least somewhat helpful.

 

Yikes! That is a great picture. The pucker factor is definitely high on that one.

 

Thanks McCurty for you continual help. The problem may be with the new soft top on the 2010 jeep. We have a cable that tightens down the top. There are no clips. I actually tried to raise that portion of the top but it doesn't just pop up. The cable keeps it taught. It's raining right now but when I get a chance I will try it again using your suggestion. I hope I am the only 2010 owner who is having this problem because it is such a great rack.

The wind deflector certainly quiets the ride. I get some soft top chatter now but it is something I can live with.....if I get the opportunity to put the top down.

David.... anyone else with 2010 soft top that has this working?

 

aah I see... sounds interesting. I noticed they are calling the top the "Easy Folding Soft Top" now instead of the "Sunrider Soft Top" so maybe it's easier to fold under normal circumstances? In any case, yeah, sorry I'm not as familiar with that one. Good luck -- would be cool to see some pics of the mechanism in any case if you have them around, otherwise I'll check out someone's 2010 on a run sometime soon.

EDIT: Okay I just went and watched a video of this on YouTube and I see your issue. I'm assuming you can't just push up on the middle rail, since it now appears to be hinged to the side bows to locate it. Can you get a little bit of slack on the side cables by releasing the rear flaps all the way in the back by the tailgate, then pushing back and up on the front clips? Just a thought. I'll let someone with actual experience in the issue chime in now

 

Darn McCurdy....You are helpful I actually tried that too. Took off the rear and side windows and released the rear sides. It is still stuck. I called Gobi and was to get a return call but nothing yet. I am feeling this is a design flaw for the 2010 top. When I purchased this I asked David if there might be any problems with the 2010? "no...no problem". Maybe I am the first with a 2010 soft top. And David....Where are you? No return call from Gobi and no return call from David. Well as long as it keeps raining I can be patient but I think there's somethings wrong in Denmark.
