easy to blame a group... IF it was the sole reason, they would have broken the Unions long ago... Trust me... They can pass health care and 2 bailout bills, they can break a union...

SAD TO SEE PEOPLE ON THIS FORUM TALK BAD ABOUT THEIR FELLOW AMERICANS AND LABOR UNIONS. BIG GOVERMENT SOLD USE OUT NOT THE COST OF OUR LABOR. GO DOWN TO ANY LU HALL AND EXPRESS YOU FEELINGS TO THEM ABOUT UNION LABOR I AM SURE THEY WOULD LOVE TO EDUCATE YOU ON LABOR LAWS AND BASIC ECONOMICS. SOME WOULD CALL YOU TROLLS, NOT ME . PEOPLE WHO BAD MOUTH THEIR FELLOW AMERICANS IN MY EYES ARE TRAITORS. FAR AS THE QUALITY OF THE 3.8 ITS NOT THE ASSEMBLY LINES FAULT IT IS THE LACK OF ENGINEERING.

Money is why manufacturing goes outside our borders. There is no other motivation so strong.

This link seems to be a common view as to why:
(I don't know anything about this site, but many sites express the same opinions.)

Tell the people that found out that their piston rings installed wrong that it's not an assembly line problem. The 3.8 is a simple engine that has proven to be reliable for many years before it was ever put into a jeep. If laborers want to be paid well then they need to learn how to do their job correctly.
Anyway, I still think the number of problems that have shown up compared to the total number of engines out there will still be very low.
This forum is a very small sample number of engines in total. Maybe the people that had engines that had the rings installed wrong were unlucky enough to buy a jeep that had parts assembled by a disgruntled worker and he/she did it on purpose, who knows, it's impossible to know for sure why this happened.

Of course not and I'm not saying you would, but people go into buildings killing people because they've had a bad day, what's going to stop someone from being a jerk and doing something like this?
Like I said, it's one of MANY possibilities but the design of the engine is not one of them, it's been around too long and has proven itself reliable.

And now most companies have outsourced anyway.

Yep, confirmed by a former Chrysler auto worker; cost cutting and outsourcing cheap components is the cause; see this:
