Expedition Modded Jeeps - Let's see 'em!!
Very nice! I've been thinking the last few days that I need to get some limb risers before a mid-Feb trip on the K-Trail. This trail is terrible for limbs and was a major contributor to the paint scratches you see in some of my pictures. I don't mind that, but limb risers would help protect the windshield from more severe damage. I was going to cobble something together myself, but that ORE kit looks so nice I just may go that route. Nice looking Jeep (and your dad's garage, too)!
What size and model is the tent?
&
Can you (with help) still bend the rack back to take down the top?
&
Can you remove the rack & top all as one? I'm thinking it might be nice to be able to remove the rack / tent for daily use and then throw it back on when I need it..

Sorry was offline a few days.
Tent is an Autohome Maggiolina AirTop Black Storm Medium
New Maggiolina Air Top link.
I did a ton of research before I got it and this is what I found. I'm 6'2" so I was concerned about being able to stretch out, and I wanted to be able to sleep in there with my wife and our 3 year old. After speaking on the phone for a while with the Autohome US guys, who are super nice and super helpful. They import them to the US from Italy. They told me that the medium was the best option for a taller person. As for picking the tent itself, I read a lot online and of course read the Overland Journal reviews on RTT's. The great thing about the Airtop is that you can deploy it in less than 60 seconds. It's on gas charged struts and all you have to do is release the locking straps and just flick it up and it pops into position. It is pretty amazing. I have a full nice set of regular bedding in there and I also carry a decent sized aluminum camp table and some camp chairs in there, which maxes out the limited space when it's closed. Plus you don't want too much weight that far up. The AirTop is about 135lbs I believe, but distributed nicely over the whole roof so not too bad. I had some mounting problems, but they are sorted now. I went with the black storm color out of vanity I confess. I just thought it would look a lot better on my JKU then the alternative white. The downside to the darker color is that it absorbs more heat from the sun, but the tent has lots of openings and ventilates well. As for the build quality, it is pretty amazing. The fabric, stitching and construction is top flight. I couldn't recommend it more, but it IS expensive.
As for opening the rack, I haven't done it since the tent has been up there because I only just got the mounting problem fixed. I did however speak to Gobi and they said they didn't see any reason why I couldn't lift the rack up with the tent mounted too it. There may be other issues however with that. I probably wouldn't do it with the table and chairs inside because they would slide around too much and add unnecessary weight. I also used to rest the rack on the spare when it was opened and now that I have the Nitto 37's, I don't know if I'll be able to do that. It's still in the shop so I'll report back on that.
But the real truth is, I don't take the whole top down much anyway. I pull the doors off and zip out the windows and go safari style, which suits me just fine.
As for removing the full rack, I've never done it, but don't think it should be too difficult, especially if you have the quick release front, which I do. I imagine you could just unbolt it at the flip-back hinges, disconnect it at the front and take it off. You'd still have some strange looking stuff on at the back, and you'd probably leave the windshield mounted portion on, but the bulk of it would be off. The rear brackets that connect to the frame would be too difficult to remove regularly for a complete removal IMO.

I got my new Kentrol hood latches and Offroad Elements limb risers. The AEV gen 2 snorkel is going on Friday. Just thought I would share some pics. I made a custom bracket for the gobi rack so the limb risers would fit. The Offroad Elements kit is fantastic, all stainless and powder coated a very well made kit. For those who don't know limb risers do what they are called, they help branches and debris from damaging either the windshield or snorkel
