2012 Wrangler information thread
So we've all read numerous posts on the availability of 4.10 in the Rubi U auto. What's the bottom line in terms of reality for an everyday driver? If it's going to be used 90% daily driver, 10% off road with planned max 33" tires and a 2-inch lift, is forcing the change to 4.10 from 3.73 really recommended or needed if you're already D1? If you ever go with larger tires/lift, wouldn't you re-gear to higher than 4.10 anyway? Help us relative newbies out on the everyday worth of 4.10 vs 3.73.
Lower gearing multiplies the torque available to the wheels at a greater rate. It also serves to have the engine run at a higher RPM at a given rate of ground speed. For me that meant an increase in torque that I want for towing my 3300# boat and trailer. It also means a decrease in mileage (most likely as I've not driven this combo yet). This being a second vehicle, and a toy for me, mileage was of no consequence.
I'm not so old, 39, but I tend to own vehicles only a short time, meaning I've owned and driven lost of vehicles. I based my decision on my years of experience and the large number of vehicles I've driven over my life. I feel I have a good idea how this engine and trans will behave for my use.
Also, I felt that if the gearing was too low, I would have no trouble swapping the axles with another owner who has lifted and installed bigger tire and now wants lower gearing.
If I were driving the new JKU daily, and not towing anything regularly, I'd have gone with the 3.73s based on the experience and calculations I've done.
SDbaja and Jim M thanks for the excellent insight. Both of your comments were what I was mostly thinking. Anyone else with opinions since it seems like there's lots of debate on whether to go to 4.10 or not.
SO with that said, from what I am reading and I know I will go 35's,, aftermarket bumpers ect again I can only hope that the 4:10 might be good enough in the 2012 but I'm not betting on it. I bet I'll want 4:88's or even 5:13's again. I have a 2dr now and plan to go unlimited,, so even more weight. So for me why not at least go 4:10's from the factory and have a little hope anyway.
I will have 35's within 100 miles of ownership, 3.73 were put on for the stock tire size. Just like the 11's moving up to a bigger tire does not require a regear, but it is better, IMO. Dave at aev said that auto with 35's will be perfect with the 4.10's... I think they know more than most.

:With the auto you'll probably want the 5.13s for 37-40
With the manual, 4.56or 4.88s I'm driving a manual with 37" Swampers and 4.11s and its perfect (Rubicon), The manual OD is really low.

This is why I am sticking with the 3.73's and the Rubicon 32" tires. I've seen several charts showing gear ratios comparing 3.73's and 4.10's to 3.8l and 3.6l. One of the current charts indicates the 3.73 will be fine with 35's. I guess my philosophy is do no harm. I'll let some one else blaze the trail and not lose any sleep. I saw a jeep engineer talk about mods on a video and he cautioned that one of the common mistakes folks make is modding before they really know what they want. He recommeded waiting 6-12 months and giving deep thought to what you wanted.
Here is a quote from Dave that makes me question this

Also another tip that could save you a bunch of money...IF you ordered a automatic Rubicon, the standard gears are now 3.73, however the 4.11s are an option and are perfect for 35s with the new transmission. The issue is that Jeep had a screw up in there ordering system where it said 3.73 and 4.11 are both standard...so the option couldn't be ordered, but it will save you like $1500-1800 so you might want to look into that.

Different engines and transmissions will differ. The hemi is apples and oranges compared with the 3.8 and 3.6 6's.
I can confirm you can order the 4.10 rear axle ratio with an automatic. However, it showed up as a $50/$45 charge (MSRP/FWP) on my configuration. I haven't compared that (or any of the other prices) to what others had on their forms yet.
