Winch mount W/factory bumper
I am currently in the process of mounting my winch in the factory bumper of my Rubicon. I am mounting my winch plate on top of the frame. Upside down, and in order to clear the sway bar disconnect, mount the winch plate more forward. It will put it right up against the metal bumper, that will require to cut underside of metal bumper, so that it sits right in front of the winch. Only problem is that puts the winch in front of the lower frame rail that can protect it, but to fix that problem, a front skid should work.
Well finally got the winch in. Still need to do some cosmetics where the flairhead sit, and mount the front license plate with a hinge here is a pic of how tight it is. Disconnected the sway bar, and reconnected it, so doesn't look like any interference with operation. But will have to test it offroad.
Ill post better pics when I get a chance, but basic install is same as everyone else did. Lower part of metal bumper needs to be trimmed to be able to get you hand and ratchet in to be able to bolt the metal bumper back on. If you plan on keeping factory air dam, make sure not to cut off mounting holes. Also since the front tow hooks go through the plastic bumper, its actually easier to remove the 8 nuts to tow hooks and remove the whole bumper from the jeep. Then once it is off remove the 4 bolts that hold the plastic bumper to the metal bumper. But first disconnect the fog lights, and with needle nose pliers pull the tabs out if the metal bumper that hold the wire in place
But to answer everyone's question whether or not this can be done with the Rubicon. Yes it can. I did mine with a smittybilt 8. Anything bigger may be too tight. I'll also post measurements later
That's what I hoped the answer would be. I don't know why, but o want the biggest, most obnuxiously huge, most irresponsibly powerful winch I can find. Like this:

But I will probably end up with this:

I know it isn't necessarily needed, but would it be a good idea to go ahead and get a bigger altenator?
