Superchips Flashpaq for JK, Initial Impressions
No just go straight to the tow tune. It definitely seems as if it might be running a bit lean and that should help in the interim. The stock PCM just won't manage intake and exhaust upgrades well. Blow through a tankful of fuel on the tow tune and then you should be good to go with a lobotomized PCM.
Lol, we'll let it slide.
By the way, I had to take my Jeep to the dealership (MyGig update) so I returned it to stock tune with 87 octane gas. Just in case they did any other updates... It does feel kind sluggish. Actually, it drives fine when I drive it normally (just not quite as smooth) except for when I downshift for more power and its just not there like I'd gotten used to. Same with in the upper RPMs when I drive it more aggressively through the gears.
And the kicker is that I'm getting worse gas mileage driving it easier. Speaking of which, I need to go load the 87 performance tune back in it. BRB...

My jk is tuned right now. I want to update the flashpaq to see if there have been any changes to the options lately. Do I need to return to stock before I hook the flashpaq to the computer to update? Thanks!!
You don't need to return your vehicle to stock to update the Flashpaq.
That said, I generally do as if something were to happen and I get stuck without having an immediate way to return to stock, I'd much rather be tuned to stock so all my options are open. Such would be my tuner doesn't take the update, and I need dealer service in the interim while I'm waiting to get something resolved. Not very likely, just erring on the side of caution.

JPop, I wasn't sure about that.
Last week, I couldn't update the flashpaq and tried several times, and I wasn't sure, so I did return the vehicle to stock, then returned to trying to update the Flashpaq.
It still didn't work! And it still doesn't work, with the Hypertech update application!!
I'm still running the 91 tune, I really like the "electric" feel of the motor with this tuning. And I still don't think it has any less torque than the 93 tune which I ran for almost 1K miles. And it runs good on 89 to 93 octane fuels around here. The 93 tune sometimes felt like it was just about near a spitback or misfire, especially at low rpms. Now of course all motors may exhibit different "tolerances" for different tunes, due of course to differences in intake, exhaust, cam timing, gas quality, driving style, vehicle weight, and so forth.
I didn't realize the Tow setting was for 91 or better gas, it sure ran good with 89 in the tank. Of course so does the 91 tune. I'd advise people with the Flashpaq to try all the tunes, to see which your particular Jeep likes the best.
I'm going to stick with the 91 tune for now, I usually get 93 Shell/Amoco here in the neighborhood, or 91 at a distant jobsite. It runs beautifully with both.
It really has reduced the need to downshift to 5th, and on those occaisons where you do have to downshift I've gotten pretty good at making the shift, then resuming use of the cruise control.
I can't really comment on the gas mileage, my JK has never gotten good mileage, but of course I've never really tried to see how good it would get, as I'm usually pushing 65 on the secondary roads, and 80 on the interstate. But it definitely has improved, maybe in the 1 to 1.5 mpg range. Still, a lengthy 80mph commute on the interstate gives around 14mpg, not bad for a Jeep at 80+mph speeds. On secondary roads it's more like 15 to 16.5mpg, but that's a no prisioners run staying at 10+mph over the limit, and exceeding that at times on hilly terrain.

So I went ahead and went back to stock (just in case) and than to the tow setting and it runs a hell of a lot better
Only thing is that I have 87 in the tank now, should I start using the 91
will the 91 tunning damage anything with 87 in the tank.
Well, I ran the 87 for a couple tankfuls on the tow setting and obviously wasn't smart enough to have looked at the manual to see that it requires 91 or better. Not sure if there is a screen on the Flashpaq itself that says you should be running 91 or better you need to tab through. If so I guess I just don't think about that stuff much anymore when going through or it wasn't there.
Anyway, I didn't notice any ill effects from running the 87 and the tow tune. That said, I wouldn't knowingly do it again or stray from 91 better in the future. With as good as it did run, I'm even more curious as to how well it will run with the right fuel.
