so, it says you can install it on all models except the sahara and rubicons..so in other words, use it only on the X.
Not enough clearance for 17" and 18" tires, so in other words use it only on the base model X without the S package.
why can't they just say "install on base model X with 16" tires only".

No, they would have to say, "Intall on base model X with 16" tires only, IF SOLD IN THE UNITED STATES"

Seriously, VOODOO has 17 inch wheels, and the 255/70 tires, and his manual doesn't say not to use chains. HMMMMMMMMMMM

 

I'll try to put them on and snap some pictures to post here as soon as I get a chance...

 

the reason for not using the chains due to clearance is Chain is loose
Cable you can get much tighter. manual says nothing about Cables.

 

Here's a picture of the chain mounted on the rear. It gets pretty tight !
I'll go to see my tire guy and ask him what HE thinks.

Asked Jeep dealer yesterday 'bout this and he asked Crysler Italy and the answer was:
"Even if not written in owners manual the Rubicon is NOT supposed to mount chains."


I wonder what happens if someone in Italy puts chains on his Rubi and rips them off destroying the braking hose or something else...

Wonder how having different wheels/tires affects this clearance.

 

I often go to Cascades mountains for backcountry skiing/snowshoeing etc. during the winter, but I've never used chains on the pavement.

That said, I usually carry chains just in case. I like GoCraws (flextrax "dot" com) because it's very easy to put them on (even when the tires are covered in mud/snow). It doesn't look like they provide much traction, but they actually work... as good as chains or cables. When I went to climb Mt. Langley in High Sierra in late fall/early winter a couple of years ago, I got stuck on the NF service road with mix of snow and mud (underneath). I was able to recover without much hustle thanks to this thing.

 

I contacted Chrysler direct and just received a reply to contact my dealer and inquire as to why chains are not recommended and to find out what modifications to my vehicle, if any, can be made to accomodate chains. Regarding the cables, they were not made for the 265/70/18 tires.
Interesting problem for a "go anywhere" vehicle. I guess that excludes most resorts.

 

I'v driven many times in the snow in my old TJ(s) but never had to use my snow chains, although they're always in my Jeep because the law requires you to have it.
