Shotgun for home defense.
I'm glad Colorado is a 'Castle Doctrine' state. As long as the bad guy/criminal/rapist/burglar/murderer falls dead inside my home, the cops will thank me for my service and be on their merry way.
870, loaded, under the bed. (No kids in my house.)
Kimber ultra carry 45 in my nightstand at night or on my hip during the day.
I don't think the bad guy should get to hear the racking of my pump shotgun unless he's survived the first blast of large, 00-buck holes into his center of mass.

single shot 12 ga with birdshot --> makes a nasty hole at close range and there is no way in hell they will get all those bb's out
if shotgun fails:
sig 226 16round +3 extra 15rnd mags JHP
if sig fails:
ak-74 30 rounds 5.45x39 SP + 1 extra 30 round mag of SP and 12 - 30 round mags of FMJ
if AK fails:
zombies have invaded and everyone is dead... refer to games like fallout 3, left 4 dead, and dead rising for survival techniques.

I taught CQB in Special Forces and I recommend you take a course on home defense. There are a bunch of legal issues you need to know about before you shoot someone. And if you do shoot anyone, kill them. If you're not willing to kill someone, don't buy a gun. The person will take it away from you and shot you with it.
You'll need a locking gun safe to keep the weapon secured. It can be an anchored locking case or spend the money on a gun safe. You don't want to have to screw with a trigger guard or a cable lock through the breach if you need the weapon. It takes me less than 6 seconds to open my gun safe.
A pistol is a great side arm, but the shotgun is more versatile. You can buy different loads to handle different problems and reloading is simple. I put ghost ring rear sights and a standard rifle front sight on my Winchester and I can accurately hit targets out to 150 meters.
I also recommend you carry rounds on either a butt stock keeper or a sidesaddle rig. The last thing you want to do is have to hunt for ammunition. Do not keep ammo in the weapon. Someone will rack a round in the chamber and blow a hole in something screwing around. The rounds on the weapon can be loaded in seconds. I keep extra rounds on the door tray so I can grab them in a hurry.
You shouldn't need more than a few rounds in home defense, if you do, you're under siege and in a lot more trouble than you think. You can keep a bandoleer of 12 gauge ammo hanging on the weapon so you can grab it and the weapon if you need it. The advantage of the bandoleer is that you can mix your loads. You may want buck shot for up to 50 meters, but want to reach out and touch someone with a sabot or slug out to 100 meters.
The last bit of advice is to have a plan. You don't want to shoot your wife (or maybe you do
). I don't recommend the average person confront a burglar or other criminal if you don't need to. Secure your location; call the cops; comfort the wife and kids. Make sure you tell the police dispatcher where you are in the home and you're armed. You don't want the cops shooting you by accident, and they don't play nice with people with firearms.
I think at 50-100 meters you have surpassed your legal self defense range, unless you're in an open field and their returning fire. I also believe after you pass the 50yd mark; you really need a rifle.
