I currently have EVO. The problem I've had with them is they tend to trap muck up inside the axle housing. I've had the chromoly shafts get ground down at the axle seal after playing in rivers for a while. Had to machine shafts and replace seals. Because of this, a friend of mine has recommended that I go with these on the outside instead of interior sleeves (we're building a D44 to replace my D30) ...

Rock-Slide Engineering AXOS10044 - Rock Slide Engineering Outer Sleeve Kit for 07-15 Jeep® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited JK with Dana 30/44 Front Axle - Quadratec

And to answer the begged question: He has installed trusses (he owns a business that builds expedition vehicles) and doesn't care for them because they trap mud and debris on top of the axle, leading to rust and corrosion.

Mark,
Dually noted and I will look into your recommend item. I have never been a fan (looks) of the trussed. Are you building up a Dana 44 or an aftermarket? Either way, I will be working what I have so far and one day I will upgrade. Thank you again.

It's not really an Expedition per say, just a smaller 2dr which forces me to strap stuff outside. My GF and I can live out of it for a week or so though.

I don't carry extra fuel as I haven't needed it. It's in the back of my mind though. Will I need extra fuel when I get out to Moab?

If you're just doing trails from out of town, you shouldn't. However, if you plan to drive White Rim Trail (take note that they are starting a permit system even for day use on WRT), then I'd recommend carry an extra five gallons. If you plan to drive Elephant Hill (also newly required day permits), you can drive it from Moab and fill at the gas station near the park. But you'll probably save quite a bit of money if you carry much cheaper gas from Moab. I write these having been with a friend in a two door who was running very low on gas on both of those trails (four doors have a larger tank and shouldn't have a problem).

(2) I would think significant mods to the JK's suspension and cooling system would be required to accommodate the campers additional weight, shift in CoG and enormous sail area. (3) If it is being marketed as an Overland camper, you might want to consider the prototype "Africa" model JK that is now touring the country as the "JK of choice" for your camper. The "Africa" has a stiffer 2.5" lift and 35" tires which would make getting over the "whoop-de-doos" on the trail a little easier than the stock unmodified Rubicon you are now using. The "Africa's" interior is also about 6" longer in the rear and the top is solid and not removable, which might provide a stiffer platform. (4) The hit in gas mileage must be significant so you are going to have to add a second gas tank or provide a way to carry a four additional Jerry cans. (5) You now carry 8 gallons of water - not nearly enough. The general rule is one gallon of water per person, per day minimum. If you and your wife are going on a week long overland trip, that's not nearly enough. (6) If you are using standard solar panels, 4 to be exact, you are going to add significant weight above the CoG, which is already too high. How are you going to compensate for that weight shift? (7) Paint that sucker white ! Camping in the desert in a black camper is not safe. (8) Lastly, the installation of your camper on a JK is not at the skill level of a backyard mechanic and 90% of JK owners. Installation of your unit on a customer's JK must be an option you offer. Also, I question the safety of having the propane bottle in the cabin. You might want to consider moving it outside of the unit, maybe in the rear. Well, you wanted comments, there's mine. DF
There are some nice YouTube videos by Ronnie Dahl in a 4 door 79 series Toyota Truck with aluminum cover over bed that gets around nicely in my option! Just not much flex in suspension! It is not a rock crawler but, would love to have in states as expedition vehicle, for myself!!!

Thinking about adding a snorkel to the rig. Mainly for the benefits of having a pre filter. Who has one and can provide the pros and cons; brands etc. Click image for larger version

I have AEV.

Pros: Fishbowl traps some dust, keeping it off air filter. Sounds cool with either the fishbowl or the ram air scoop. Quality construction; engineered and made in USA. I don't sweat stuff like this while others are running a high PF ...

Cons: Expensive. May interfere with other mods unless you fabricate custom brackets (mirrors, lights, overhead rack, etc).

Thanks Mark.

Looking into the AEV and ARB. Figured Might have some modification to do because of the roof rack. To be expected.

Did you install yourself?
