Default Stupid Question but...

If you can change the program and make the jeep have more power and/or better gas mileage without hurting the vehicle, why wouldn't the manufacturer/dealership make those changes? Any theory's?

Yes they, the manufacturer, would. But that little three letter agency , NO not them, the other ones, the EPA . They would prevent it.

I installed it last week, I have a 2dr sport, 3.21 gears, 34s, 2.5" lift, drop in filter. Installed the 87 tune and loved the improvements. it raised me 2mpg so far and it increased my performance alot. 60mph comes fast now. Jeep feels alot lighter on its feet. Woke the engine up big time.

If you don't mind me asking, what is your gas mileage now?

That’s a great question that we field a few times a year when new customers discover performance tuning and are curious about the great ‘bang for the buck’ found in Superchips products. I suspect same question applies to practically all SEMA members. I’m sure MSD Ignition, Edelbrock, K&N, Magnaflow, and Superlift field similar questions – why choose aftermarket technologies over the ones delivered from the OEM factory? We’ll the answer is fairly complicated yet quite simple – the OEMs accommodate the needs of the masses while Superchips designs products to suit the specific interests of enthusiasts.

There are a number of factors that influence the calibrations and settings selected by an OEM. Those factors include emissions regulations, fuel availability, everyday drivability, customer use cycles (hours on-road v off-road), and other subjective preferences like shift firmness and throttle ‘feel’. The OEMs tend to seek a universal ‘sweet spot’ for the everyday driver. For example, a Tahoe has to satisfy a soccer mom with daily driving needs and a bass fisherman with 4X4 / boat hauling needs. With a performance tuner, the driver can select and adjust a broad set of tuning features targeting their specific driving needs. The boat tower needs more low end power and firm shifts. The soccer mom needs smooth shifting (no spilled sip cups) and fuel economy.

The Jeep Wrangler is a great example of tuning to meet unique needs. The Jeep factory doesn’t offer some off-road functions because those settings aren’t well suited for daily use – crawl mode is for off-road driving ONLY. That’s a case where the Superchips tuner delivers unmatched Jeep functionality when the factory can’t. When you’re on the trail you’ll notice the driving difference!

Regarding durability, the OEMs typically have a ‘factor of safety’ [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Factor_of_safety]that ensures the vehicle meets life-of-vehicle (typically 10 years or 150,000 miles) expectations. Superchips keeps those factors in mind when it develops higher horsepower and torque settings - the additional horsepower from a tuner typically stays within those durability thresholds. However, significant horsepower gains may lead shorter vehicle maintenance cycles. We even offer Cortex with an industry-exclusive 2-year limited powertrain warranty because we’re confident our tuning products are reliable for everyday use.

In any case, Superchips products comply with emissions standards so they are street legal.

The bottom line is…. the OEMs settings are a great compromise to satisfy the masses. A Superchips tuner allows users to tailor their calibrations (performance/economy/towing/four-wheeling) for their specific driving needs. To put it in other terms, the OEM ‘records the track’ in the music studio with their mixing board and their ‘ears’ (or in this case the seat of their pants). Superchips allows the ‘listener’ to adjust the bass and treble to eleven (for all the Spinal Tap fans)…

I can attest to this personally. I used my Superchip to program my rig for Crawl mode during a wheeling trip. There was a noticeable throttle response change as a result of the programming. It was beneficial on the trail, but as I found out later, very non-beneficial on the highway. I never reprogrammed to Tow mode before leaving, and in the convoy home, I couldn't keep up with the rig in front of me. I was like what the...? It wasn't until the convoy had to pull over, due to a drive shaft failure on another rig, that I realized what was going on. I reprogrammed to Tow mode while they removed the front drive shaft from the other rig, and VOILA! My rig was highway worthy again.

Before the tune it was 14.2 mpg..and i would lose mpg on the highway due to the wind/elevation here in Oklahoma. After the tune (87 tune), I am getting 16.3 mpg and it stays there on the highway, instead of dropping significantly like before. So a 2.1 mpg increase, but ALOT more usable power.

Edit:

If it gives you a better idea...(keep in mind i have a 2 door)...I always fill up to full, and fill up shortly after the low gas light comes on. WITHOUT the tune, i would get around 220 miles per tank. AFTER the 87 tune, the first fill-up (I had a heavy foot due to the enjoyment of having power) i got 250 miles to the tank. This second tank of gas, i still have over 1/4 of a tank left, and I have already gone 200 miles..my guess is i will have to fill up at around 280 miles for this tank. So an increase of ~60 miles per tank. So 60/16.3 = 3.7 gallons of gas that i save each tank by using Superchips. So I save around 10 bucks now each fill-up. So it will pay itself off in a decent amount of time.
