Thanks. An appropriate size Pelican container would be good in these mounts, or how about a large ammo can...

The ammo can in the photo isn't technically an ammo can, it's an AN/PVS-14 night vision google case. It's basically the same footprint as a 50 cal case, but about 13" tall. They're not too hard to find on eBay and surplus places.

About freeing up space (and ammo cans) - there's space in the back of the JK (well the JKU anyway) that is very hard to use - the space above the front of the inner fenders. It's sloped and curved so it's very hard to use for storage.

I've designed a simple mount that makes that space usable, it holds one or more ammo cans and has a Molle grid as well. I've had them in my JKU for the past couple of months and they're very handy. Like the side mount jerry can holders, they bolt to existing holes in the Jeep and install/remove in minutes. In this photo, on the left is a "Fat 50" ammo can (larger than the standard 50 cal can), and on the right are two 30 cal cans.

Military Surplus Ammo Can 30mm
Not sure when/if they'll become available, I'm meeting with a company about them week after next. If they sign up for them, I'd expect they'd be on the market by early summer.

You'll find that a 30mm can is too large to fit in the space between the top of the inner fender, the back of the back seat and the roll bar. Here's one sitting on the rear floor of a JK, it might be hard to tell from this photo but it definitely won't go up there.

But here are two ways to use a can that size. You could carry it on an Excursion Rack (http://www.retrofitoffroad.com/shop/...-tire-mount/):

Or, you could bolt it directly to the mount portion of a spare tire jerry carrier (http://www.retrofitoffroad.com/shop/...w-tall-tray/):

1 just came in today.......and it finally stopped raining so I can install it.......and it came with a ratchet strap which I commented earlier thinking that it didn't.........and it's MADE IN THE USA!

I know that whomever decides to pick up your designs is somewhat out of your hands but I'm glad MORryde decided to. Yeah it's $160-$200 depending where you find it, who's got it stock, etc. but I don't mind paying some extra if I can help out our domestic mfg sector and middle class jobs. I'm glad someone like Smittybuilt didn't get it although I wouldn't be surprised if they came out with their own cheap knock-off version.

Those wheel well mounts are pretty nice also!

All of the companies that have picked up my designs (5 different companies so far, different companies for different products) are US companies that do their manufacturing in the USA - Indiana, Oregon, South Carolina and Ohio. I don't have any plans to license my designs for overseas manufacturing.

The company that's doing the JK side mounts has a patent application in for them, so if a knock-off does happen there will be some protection.

I'd like to see the wheel well ammo can mounts (plus a few other things I've designed for ammo cans) get picked up for production, should know in two weeks about that.

I'm sure yours doesn't have this sticker, but this was on first production ones they sent me:

You're a good man jscherb. Thanks for not being a sell-out in an environment, especially in manufacturing and big-corp where selling-out has been the trend, where you'd line your pockets more by doing so and screwing our future legacies in the process.

Thank you good sir.

Thank you. I design stuff like this as a hobby, lining my pockets is not a part of my decision process when a company is interested in bringing one of my designs to market. I'm far more concerned with whether or not they'll do a good job manufacturing, marketing and supporting the product and if they're nice people to work with.

JScherb - some of my buddies are telling me that my new side-mount jerry can holder will harm the JK body tub with many hours and miles of backcountry travel. They're talking metal fatigue due to putting that much weight on a part of the body that wasn't designed for it. Thoughts? Here's some photos, typical of what I do with my Jeep. I do tend to go long distances of washboard/backroads mixed with a few challenging "jeep trails."

I've got the passenger side bracket installed, and the driver side bracket is on order.

Thanks!

Since you've already installed one side, you know that the side mounts are attached to reinforced structures in three places:

- the pillar that the doors mount to (using one of the door hinge bolts, the doors can apply a lot more leverage and weight to the bolt points than the jerry can ever will)

- the structure the windshield mounts to (using one of the same bolts many roof racks attach to, which carry more weight and can apply a lot more leverage to the bolt points)

- and one location on the top of the fender, prevented from movement by the optional self-drilling screw into the structure that runs from the body tub up to the radiator support (you should install this screw). The optional screw goes into the reinforced structure that supports the entire front clip of the Jeep, including the radiator, grille, fenders, etc., and trail use will apply more stress to that structure than the jerry can ever will.

These location points for the side mounts were chosen carefully to prevent any issues; they're plenty strong enough to carry full jerry cans on the trail without problems.
