Superchips Flashpaq for JK, Initial Impressions
i tracked 4 tank-fulls prior to the purchase, because i was buying an exhaust and wanted to see if there was any difference. the exhaust and tuner arrived within 5 days of each other and i just couldn't wait to run the 3 or 4 tank-fulls with just the exhaust to determine the exhaust impact. once the initial thrill wears off i might return it to stock settings and calculate the tuner's mpg impact. i doubt it though.
Big thanks to Northridge4x4!!
Got my flashpaq today and installed tune right away (after recomended update) with no problems at all!!
I am currently running 91 oct and when i set it to the 91 tune, i herd pinging/detonation. I ran the tank empty before puting in 91 and have been using 91 for 2 tank fulls so there is no mix of 87 and 91 (i was getting it ready for the tune...lol). Anyway im thinking its the spark plugs. Im coming up to 28k miles and dont think they have ever been changed. I went down to the towing tune (love the low end torque!) and pinging/detonation went away for the most part. I can still hear it very lightly. Im gonna play it safe and take it easy until the computer learns the tune. I'll do the spark plugs this weekend and hopefuly runs better.
Thank everyone here for their input!

Here in NE Indiana most gas stations only offer 87, 89, and 93 octane. No sign of 91 at any Shell or Marathon I've been to in recent weeks. Wonder if the Superchips engineers would be interested in an 89 octane tune?
they do have a 93 if you are interested in that route. i would call them and let them know. i clearly have no idea what is involved in developing a specific octane tune, but let them know you are looking. if enough people speak up they may develop one - they may even have one in the works.

The performance was certainly good, but the only thing I could really accurately check without a whole lot of intervention was my first programmer. I didn't find much if any performance gains turning it on or off which was led me down the Superchips path. No question I don't need to scratch my head if the Flashpaq is working or not, and I'd probably be kicking and screaming like a little baby if you took it away from me.
I certainly understand the wisdom of making a single change and noting the results from my drag racing experience, but dealing with the PCM is quite a different experience as it might take a full tank of fuel for the computer to take to the changes. That's why I threw caution to the wind and made the wholesale changes. No regrets about going that direction and it left the majority of the onus on the programmer and again, I couldn't be happier with the Flashpaq.
With a modestly higher octane, and higher octane fuel burning slower, the Flashpaq combined with the PCM has the opportunity to not back off the advance as much. Certainly this isn't ideal and having a match in programmer settings to octane would be better but running slightly rich isn't all that problematic outside of potentially fouling plugs a little earlier. When I checked my plugs after running a couple tanks full at +2 Octane level pretty much demonstrated to me that this wasn't an issue and a couple months down the line I didn't see any ill effects either.
I'd certainly like to see the same 93 setting for the Ram as I have for the Jeep, but I'm not sweating it in the least.
