I go to brazil quite often. Those guys really understand off roading as they deal with some of the most unforgiving environments I have ever seen. Plus if something breaks... they are a long ways from civilization so nothing can break. One of the most common designs I have seen for a snorkel is a twin snorkel with a valve. The first one is right above the tire for cold air. It has the second one going into the cabin of the vehicle. When they go into water, they hit the switch, and the air is then pulled from the cabin. No cutting involved and nothing visible to the eye. Just food for thought.
